NEC elections - I am standing

Dear Colleagues
I am been pursuaded to seek nominations in the next three months for the NEC of the labour party.  I have had various positions within the party.  I am committed to the grassroots and trade union movement.  I also want the party to rengage with the electorate as well as its members.  We have a new leader of the party and we must pursaude him to follow traditional Labour party values.  We must follow a more trade union friendly agenda, after all they established the party with other affliliates.  I call for democratic change and more accountability within the party.  I call for a withdrawl from Iraq, a return to a publically run NHS and schools and the full implementation of the social chapter and Warwick Agreement.  I also am looking at climate change and the temporary workers directive as issues.

Re: NEC elections - I am standing (#1)

You o the grassroots alliance slate, if not who persuaded you. The unions have a number of members already do you feel you are standing to supplement those or on a wider platform.

Re: NEC elections - I am standing (#3)

Hmmm, that post could have done with an editor. Might want to clean up on the old grammar if you fancy your chances.

Re: NEC elections - I am standing (#4)

Just a heart-felt attempt.  There is one none grassroots candidate left, so I am specifically trying to get the support.  The answer to the question from also leeds is 37 constituencies and 6 unions.

Thanks

Re: NEC elections - I am standing (#6)

John, what do you mean "there is one none grassroots candidate left" ?

I think the details of the six Centre Left Grassroots Alliance candidates are coming out soon.

The more people who stand with a similar policy area to the CLGA (and I think you are standing on a progressive platform) could cause a split in the progressive vote  and is in the interests of the Labour First/New Labour slate.

Incidentally, who is on the Labour First slate this year? Anyone reading who could let us know? Luke A perhaps?

I think 5 out 6 CLGA candidates are already known with the 6th still to be decided.
Ann Black, Christine Shawcroft, Peter Willsman will re-stand. Mohammed Azam and Peter Kenyon will be the other 2 candidates with a 6th candidate (a woman) still to be decided.
Walter Walfgang is retiring.

Re: NEC elections - I am standing (#16)

Andrea I am standing on a left/centre left ticket. I hope I can count on your support.

Thanks

Re: NEC elections - I am standing (#8)

Dear repub

There is only one none Grassroots person in the consitituency section of the NEC.  That is the position I am going for.  I already have massive support across a number of CLP's.  I will myself be supporting the grassroots anyway, but I am standing as a progressive left/grassroots person

Thanks and I hope can count on your support

Re: NEC elections - I am standing (#9)

But the CLGA will have a full slate of six candidates John.

Re: NEC elections - I am standing (#10)

Dear repub

I know eventually they will.  They are not all confirmed, plus it shakes the election up nicely.  Remember there is a right wing slate.  The names I know, will be published later, it is effectively a firmly right-wing versus left-wing contest.  I have to keep my hand in.

After consulting people on the left, I am standing

Thanks

Re: NEC elections - I am standing (#12)

Does that mean you hope that you will be the 6th person on the CLGA slate and if you aren't you won't stand.

People keep making the point about it being about 2 slates, which it is really but due to the fact CLPs can make 6 nominations not 1 there are many more candidates. So realistically if John isn't on the CLGA slate he won't be elected, but will he stop a CLGA member being elected? That is the nub of the issue.

Re: NEC elections - I am standing (#13)

I entirely disagree that either CLGA or LabourFirst have any mandate to demand people don't stand in favour of their slates.

There's no dishonour in losing a democratic election and this slate business discourages a lot of good people from putting their names forward.

I was particularly annoyed at the cynical adoption of Walter Wolfgang last time as a Grassroots Alliance candidate.

Re: NEC elections - I am standing (#15)

Considering he is a long-standing CLPD member and has always been involved in promoting the CLGA slate, I don't think it half as annoying as him being pulled from his seat, expelled from conference, the removal of his credentials by Chris Lennie and being held under the Terrorism Act.

Re: NEC elections - I am standing (#14)

I am just standing for the NEC on a progessive ticket.  I just hope to get elected in the confusion of the one nomination rule.

Re: NEC elections - I am standing (#17)

Wiseman, you should stand - even if they don't put you on the GRA slate. We need good left voices standing. As far as I understand only STLP balloted its members on who should be the STLP's two nominees on the GRA slate - the others were picked presumably by Pete and Christine. Hats off to Peter Kenyon for bringing a bit of long needed democratic accountability to the GRA!

Re: NEC elections - I am standing (#18)

Dear Val

Thanks for the support. I am not against the Grassroots alliance, I voted for them last time.  They are good people, with a lot of experince, but I feel there is a gap there on the NEC, which doesn't cover those actvists in the twentys and thirties and have left Labour student's/Young Labour, the youth section of our unions/apprenticeships and need a progressive voice and encouragement onto the next level.  I want greater support for young councillors, young shop stewards (in the party) and PPC's.  They are our future, but we do need the likes of Walter, Christine and the Mike Griffiths's of this world to pass on experince onto the next generation, on why this party was established and who we respresent.

Keep the red flag flying comrades
