Re: The search starts for a new General Secretary (#1)

I think that as many people as possible should apply. After all, no candidate could mess up as much as the previous post holder.

Re: The search starts for a new General Secretary (#8)

Instead of a new General Secretary perhaps they should employ a maths teacher to teach Peter Hain how to add up.

Re: The search starts for a new General Secretary (#2)

Why do political parties of all shades advertise these jobs in newspapers that hardly anyone reads?.

Re: The search starts for a new General Secretary (#3)

Because they do it to meet the laws, they already know who they want.

Re: The search starts for a new General Secretary (#5)

Do you mean this is another law they have only "nearly" broken. Tut Tut.

Re: The search starts for a new General Secretary (#6)

There is no law to say you must advertise jobs - the Labour Party if so minded could appoint who it wants.

It is advertising the post to comply with good practice and perhaps to try and attract people who dont move in the inner circle.

Re: The search starts for a new General Secretary (#7)

I think it is in employment law. All appointments should be fair and seen to be fair. And any good employer will seek to get the best possible candidate; so it's not a forgone conclusion who will get it.

Re: The search starts for a new General Secretary (#4)

Looks like they must have changed the selection criteria from the last time.

Have a look at part two of the person specifications if you fancy a laugh...

Re: The search starts for a new General Secretary (#9)

I'm going to pop in my CV - you never know, eh?

Re: The search starts for a new General Secretary (#12)

Come on a good leftie like you, your over qualified for this lot, they would be so frightened of a true labour person they couldn't cope and would resign on mass sighting the militant tendancy was back in town

Re: The search starts for a new General Secretary (#14)

Probably, but you never know if you don't try!

;o)

Re: The search starts for a new General Secretary (#15)

Will keep you posted, but I have to say the online application form was a tad offputting (for example the bit where it said 'current salary, e.g. 70000'!!! and the options for current or most recent employment all being a tad lofty, shall we say...)

Re: The search starts for a new General Secretary (#10)

What about the search for a new Work and Pensions Secretary?

Re: The search starts for a new General Secretary (#11)

Job for Frank Field I'd say. Hutton did well on 'Energy' yesterday, so he can't come back to 'Pensions'. At last the Govt has taken a firm decision an an issue instead on flapping around. More of this firm, decisive decisions please.

Re: The search starts for a new General Secretary (#13)

If you resize the banner image at the top of this post then the front page of Labour Home will return to normal (it's blank at the top at the moment).

Job Spec fury in NEC, appointment delayed (#16)

Tribune reports today that the GenSec Job Spec was issued contrary to explicit instructions to party officers from the NEC that the NEC should be consulted on wording. Instead hired headhunters (Rockpools) wrote the spec. Diane Hayter is furious. Final decision is now expected to be made in March not this month.

Anyone know any more?
