mp's pay hike

At last Gordon Brown has come up with a positive suggestion: that MP's should not vote themselves a pay rise. MP's should be setting an example to the rest of us. MP's  should never be left to take the final decision themselves; it should be left to an Independent Body, a Citizens Panel, to make the award on a recommendation, or not, as the case may be. They should also consider 'performance related pay' as a factor. But until then, Gordon needs to be more decisive and put his foot down: he should order a 3 Line Whip on the matter.

Re: mp's pay hike (#1)

Cameron's silence on this is very interesting - I'd like someone to publicly ask him if he endorses Brown's view that in the current economic climate, MPs salaries increases should be in line with other public sector workers. Or is he under serious pressure to keep silent as the Mirror suggested last week.

Re: mp's pay hike (#2)

I agree that this was the correct thing for the PM to say. However I heard an even better suggestion elsewhere: link MPs pay directly to median pay in the private sector. This way, MPs pay is directly linked to the wealth of the country, and the only way they can get a pay raise is to get everyone else's pay up too. (The restriction to the private sector is to prevent them indirectly voting themselves an increase by upping civil service pay).
