Boris boils over in the Commons

Boris Johnson ranted and raved in the Commons today after Gordon Brown highlighted the Tory's commitment to cutting the police budget.

Boris Johnson famously couldn’t be bothered to turn up to vote on Crossrail in Parliament, but he was in the chamber today to hear Prime Minister’s Questions.

In response to a question from Andrew Dismore MP, Gordon Brown pointed out that while London has record numbers of Police, thanks to the investment of the government and of Ken Livingstone, Boris Johnson has said that he wants to cut the budget of the Met Police.

At the end of PMQs, Boris clambered to his feet to issue a ranting point of order, demanding that Brown withdraw his claim – and insisted that he didn’t want to cut police numbers.

This is yet another flip-flop from Johnson.  Maybe he doesn't remember promising cuts at the Tory hustings last September.

He said: "We have got to be absolutely clear where the scope for real economies is and the real big ticket for spending is the Metropolitan Police and Transport for London. That's where the real savings, believe me, are to be found."

Coincidentally – Ken Livingstone’s budget, announced today, will see another extra 1,000 police officers hitting the streets.
