Machines, markets and morals: debate announced on future of the NHS and the democratic state

Following the launch of the pamphlet Machines, markets and morals: the new politics of a democratic NHS we can announce a major debate in the House of Commons at 6pm on Thursday 28 February with Compass Chair Neal Lawson, Professor Julian Le Grand, UNISON's Head of Health Karen Jennings, Anna Coote from the Healthcare Commission and chaired by The Observer's Mary Riddell.

The pamphlet by Compass Chair Neal Lawson can be downloaded from the Compass publications page. In it he makes the case against the bureaucratic and market state and its replacement with a democratised and humanised state. As such it follows the key themes of Compass: the demand for greater equality and our desire for more democracy to make it happen and create the opportunity for collective freedom and not just its narrow individualised counter part.

With the 60th anniversary of the NHS, the Darzi Review, the possibility of a Constitution of the NHS and the renewed interest of the Conservatives, Compass, through this pamphlet, wants to spark a political debate about the future of this most cherished institution.

The pamphlet was kindly and generously supported by UNISON. The issue of the democratisation of public services will be pursued vigorously by Compass. In March, again working with UNISON, we will publish on the arguments for the co-production of public services as we endeavour to put more detail on a public service model that is both modern and left.
