Home Secretary wouldn't walk the streets of Hackney

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has told the Sunday Times that she wouldn't walk the streets of Hackney, an area with a burgeoning LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered) population, at night. Ironically, fellow Home Office Minister, Meg Hillier is the MP for Hackney South and Shoreditch.

Asked by the newspaper if she would walk alone in Hackney Ms Smith replied: "Well, no, but I don't think I'd have ever have done."

She added "Well, I just don't think that's a thing that people do, is it, really?" The interviewer pointed out to her that many people do not have a choice.

You don't walk in areas you don't know (#1)

Seems she compounded matters on the Andrew Marr show by saying "You don't walk in areas you don't know, in any circumstances."  Hmmm. The original Sunday Times interview is here.

Re: Home Secretary wouldn't walk the streets (#2)

Oh dear.... this is the kind of out of touch attitude which will see us further play into the ploy of special interests, and see our numbers hover around the 30pc mark in polls.
I don't see the relevance of saying that Hackney has an increasing LBGT community.
