Socialism and fascism: some people really really don't get the difference
For anyone who hasn't seen the latest episode of 'A Daily Show with John Stewart' (I deeply advise you to do so now if you haven't) you will have missed one of those interviews you really just had to see. Jonah Goldberg, author of 'Liberal Fascism: the secret history of the American left from Mussolini to the politics of Meaning', seems to be convinced that American Clintonesque liberalism is fascist. The interview went on for 18 minutes (I think that might be a record) so the editors had to cut it down to a 6 minute production which Jon Stewart admitted was 'as choppy as hell', boy I'd of liked to have seen the rest.
A great review (with the wonderful aid of lolcats) has already been done by a rather moderate republican of this absurd book but I'd like to go through where I think Jonah is so dismally flawed.
Firstly he seems to be saying that Hillary Clinton is not in fact a liberal, fair enough. I think many people, including Hillary herself, would agree that she is in fact a progressive rather than a liberal. Johan then goes onto argue that because Hillary is not a free market classical liberal she is in fact a fascist. errr, o....k....
This slight leap from being a liberal to being a fascist is justified by Jonah through Hillary's (and many other social democrat's (including my own)) view that we are all linked as a society, that when one of us falls the others should help that person back on their feet. This in turn leads to the death of the individual and the rise of a fascist state. Personally I don't get it but for some reason extremism sells well in America.
His linking that because Hillary believes in a patronizing state that takes care of society she is also a fascist is deeply flawed to say the least. Fascism, as Jon Stewart rightly says, is about the individual subverting themselves to the state, what Hillary is saying is not that we should subvert ourselves to the state, i.e. obey it and support it no matter what, but rather that the state should treat us as a society rather than as individuals. That doesn't mean you have to agree with what the state is doing it merely means that the state treats you in a patronizing way. That ain't fascism, that's socialism.
Jon Stewart rightly gave Jonah Goldberg a good kicking over this and there are some truly great lines from the interview. I order you to watch it and although I'm not Hillary's biggest fan she certainly doesn't deserve having this type of nonsense thrown at her.
