Who do you want to win the 2008 US Presidential election?

Now that Fred Thompson has entered the race it appears there are 7 big names in the contest to become President of the United States after George W Bush. Which one do you want to win?

Personally, I want Hillary Clinton to win.

Firstly, it would be great to see a female President (and preferably a black Vice-President as well in the shape of Barack Obama). It would finally make America look like a country which is getting to grips with equality and tolerance, especially after 8 dreadful years of George W Bush.

Clinton is also moderate enough and experienced enough to run a competent campaign. Although she has a fair number of 'haters', in reality the Republicans are scared of her and many American political commentators place her as the favourite to win the contest. I can't really see any Republican candidate matching her (not even Giuliani).

But the most important thing is that a Democrat actually wins. Democrats don't have a great record with Presidential elections with only one candidate serving two full terms in past fifty years (Bill Clinton of course). Democrats have only won three out of the last ten Presidential elections.

After the misery in recent years, America needs a President who will scrap Bush's tax cuts, provide universal health coverage, improve gay rights, improve America's foreign policy and standing in the world and generally make America more tolerant, less divisive and less neo-con in its outlook. Hillary Clinton is the right person for the job.

What do you think?

Re: Who do you want to win in 2008? (#1)

Barack Obama. After being a Clintonite a few months ago, I've turned against her a bit. I respect John McCain. If I had to pick a Republican veep, it would possibly be McCain, or one of the Maine Republicans, William Cohen, Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins. What about if we could encourage Bernie Sanders to run? All this nonsense though about Hillary Clinton being the 'experience candidate'. If we are counting her record as FLOTUS. Obama has been in elective office longer than her. And look what Washington experience has got us. Cheney, Rumsfeld etc.

2008 US Presidential election? (#2)

My personal choice is Rudy, pretty much the only GOP candidate I like.

As for the democrats.....I'm lost as they're all weak on the W.O.T my number one issue.

If I put that aside - I would probably back Obama.

Re: 2008 US Presidential election? (#8)

I personally think Guliani's leadership was seriously overrated after 9/11, or his leadership during and handling 9/11. Also he's becoming more conservative. I think Obama's comments about Pakistan were interesting. I am of course not suggesting a ground invasion of Pakistan, but many terrorists are just sitting on the boarder, and if Musharref wants to prove he's serious about fighting this threat, he has to show Pakistan are willing to go after the Islamists on the boarder, and be far more democratic (an issue which he has been weak and hypocritical on), which is looking more likely with former leaders such as Benazir Bhutto going back to Islamabad.

Re: 2008 US Presidential election? (#9)

I'm not specifically talking about his leadership after 9/11 - which was perhaps overated, but more just a typical patriotic american reaction.

That being said with regard his conservatism - on financial matters, yes he's very conservative - but socially he's remained pretty liberal - supports civil unions, (pro choice) abortion and his immigration position is quite liberal also.

With regard Obama, the pakistan criticism was more due to the fact he'll quite happily quit iraq - but pretend to be my hawk when it comes to easy target pakistan?

Re: Who do you want to win the (#3)

Obama for me. It's the sunny, optimistic left that hooks me.

Re: Who do you want to win the 2008 US election? (#4)

I'd like to say Hilary.  But I'm afraid that in order to prove herself as better than a man in the job, she may overshoot the runway - as did Thatcher, and prove to be more of a warrior than the git she is replacing.

Re: Who do you want to win (#5)

For some reason the poll has disappeared, so I've made a new one.

Re: 2008 US Presidential election? (#6)

Could you add Dennis Kucinich to the list?

And did someone really say they wanted a GOP candidate to win?

Re: 2008 US Presidential election? (#7)

Done. Doubt he's got much of a chance of winning though!

Re: 2008 US Presidential election? (#10)

Did someone really say they want Dennis Kucinich  to win?

Re: 2008 US Presidential election? (#11)

Touche.  But, let's be frank, Dennis would be fairly mainstream Labour if he were in the UK.

Re: 2008 US Presidential election? (#12)

I think he'd be firmly on the left of the party.

But either way, I'd be interested to hear specifically why (if) you would favour him as a candidate/president.

I'm not at all as fan as you might expect.

Fair play to the guy, he seems to always make an effort - be it presidential elections or getting his picture taken with president bush as the SOTU.

Re: 2008 US Presidential election? (#13)

I support him because he's taken an absolutely straightforward and uncompromising position on the War of Terror, and because he's pro-labour and in favour of spending more on healthcare and welfare in general.

Re: 2008 US Presidential election? (#14)

There is only one choice. Hillary.

She will not just be good for America, but she really does inspire a lot of women around the world, particularly in developing countries.
