Could the Tory party split into two after the next election?

Mercer, Bercow and Ancram. Sounds like an accountancy firm don't you think?

They must be tearing their hair out at CCHQ. First Mercer and Bercow accept 'advisory' posts from our Gordon and then up pops Ancram to trash Cameron and call for a return to the good old days of Maggie.

Isn't the real problem that the post-Thatcher Tory party simply cannot be led to the centre ground of British politics? If (when) Cameron and the Tories lose the next election I think it highly likely that the Tory party will tear itself apart and we will witness the formation of a new centre-right party (led possibly by Cameron or Nick Herbert) leaving behind the 'traditional' Conservatives ploughing a Thatcherite furrow to further electoral oblivion (led by David Davis).

The future's bright, the future's ... NOT Conservative!

Re: Could the Tory party split into two (#1)

Iain Dale has started a competition to find "THE TOP TEN REASONS MICHAEL ANCRAM SHOULD BE TAKEN OUTSIDE AND SHOT". Oh, what fun!

Re: Could the Tory party split into two (#2)

My Mum has said something, with perhaps some truth in it. 'To win, the Tories need a fascist (i.e. a Thatcherite)'

Re: Could the Tory party split into two (#3)

Mothers!

Whatever Thatcher was she was certainly a conviction politician - Cameron is not.

Re: Could the Tory party split into two (#4)

And what exactly is Brown playing at ?  No cause for celebration that Tories are taking jobs from a Labour PM.It's a disgrace.

Re: Could the Tory party split into two (#5)

I heard a rumour about a year ago that Brown's medium-to-long term aim is to end the Labour party as we know it and replace it with a new party  based upon the US Democrats, in the hope of grabbing the membership of many LibDems and the left flank of the Tories. Will the soon-to-be-formed Democratic Party in Italy be a possible template, assuming that rumour is true? Time will tell.

Re: Could the Tory party split into two (#6)

Well that was always 'the project': the emphasis in New Labour was always on the NEW.  And Brown was one of the architects, and has really managed to get the project back on track (all that 'best when we're Labour' stuff was just crude electioneering; recognising the unpopularity of Blair).  Unless we're very careful I could see there being no Labour Party in 5 years time.

Re: Could the Tory party split into two (#7)

So Brown prefers the advice of Mercer who the Tories kicked out for repeating rascist language.   Are we really feeling good about appointing him?

That action by Brown is yet another nail in Labour's column, not in the Tories.

At the moment we now have the fewest councillors for more than 30 years.   We may yet scrape another General election victory due to the economy being ok, but our base of activists is rapidly eroding away and we could lose the following election by an even bigger margin than the Tories did in 97.

Therefore, I agree with the above point by doctordunc that it is Labour that should be worrying about its future in 5+ years time.

Re: Could the Tory party split into two (#8)

Wow, with optimism like that, we can't fail!

Re: Could the Tory party split into two (#9)

Oh I'm optimistic, because I think a change is coming in the party.

Re: Could the Tory party split into two (#10)

Hopefully you don't mean change into something that is unrecognisably Labour...

Re: Could the Tory party split into two (#12)

Quite the reverse.

Re: Could the Tory party split into two (#11)

In what way exactly?

Re: Could the Tory party split into two (#13)

Its been done, happened in 94-95, its called "The Labour Party", it just hasn't got around to removing the unreconstructed (see "does the left have a future" thread for an solution..).
