Musharraf to quit as head of army

President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan is said to plan to stand down as head of the army by 15th November. This is said to be reported by an official from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (PML).

Mushahid Hussain Sayed, the PML's secretary general, said General Musharraf will resign from the post after the presidential elections.

General Musharraf seized power in the 1999 coup.

Pakistan's Supreme Court now has to debate whether he has the right to remain army chief if he seeks another term as president.
