Reid to step down as MP

According to the BBC: Never someone I agreed with politically, I nevertheless have a huge amount of respect for John Reid, and it will be sad to see him go.

Re: Reid to step down as MP (#1)

I won't be sad to see John Reid go.

Re: Reid to step down as MP (#2)

Interesting (but not totally unexpected).  Airdrie and Shotts is next door to Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East (where Rosemary McKenna is also stepping down at next GE). So there can be the chance that one of them can be an AWS. So some of the names mentioned for the selection in CK&KE can be potential riders here too (especially if CK&KE will be an AWS): Gregg McClymont (former Reid's speech writer), Kerron Cross (Christian Socialist Movement Vice Chair and shortlisted for Glasgow Central) and Danny Carrigan (former Amicus officer and North Lanarkshire councillor)

Re: Reid to step down as MP (#7)

North Lanarkshire councillor David Fagan is a likely contender too (and he has already confirmed he will stand)

Re: Reid to step down as MP (#3)

Reid was a hard worker, there's no doubt about that.

It's important to remember he's had numerous jobs in the Cabinet - and Blair relied on Reid to do well in these jobs where other Cabinet members may have failed.

In my opinion, he was right to say the Home Office wasn't fit for purpose and thanks to him the Home Office has been sensibly split up into more managable chunks.

Reid was a tough guy who didn't take prisoners and that offended many, but it also earned him the respect of many too.

Re: Reid to step down as MP (#4)

Mind you, this morning Reid attacked the Human Rights Act, so I've lost some respect for him now.

I'm sure Brown will ignore his advice on this one.

Re: Reid to step down as MP (#5)

I will be honest with Thatcher going to No 10 and with Labour looking more and more like  Tory government I think Reid is better off leaving.

Re: Reid to step down as MP (#6)

Reid was alwaysregarded as a safe pair of hands, but is he leaving politics altogether? In which case he could end up in the Lords.

Re: Reid to step down as MP (#8)

Kerron Cross (who he?) has no chance in a Scottish seat. Call me cynical but I imagine his appearance on the Glasgow Central shortlist has more to do with him not being able to take any support away from the eventual winner at the selection stage rather than his popular appeal to the Glasgow Labour masses!

Also heard that 'senior figures' in the Scottish party were looking for credible local females to run in the Lanarkshire seats.

Names touted as likely contenders for seats in the area include Joanne Milligan (already being touted heavily for the East Dumbartonshire seat but may want something closer to home turf), Donna Morris (former North Lanarkshire Councillor) and Suzanne McLeod (daughter of Rosemary McKenna MP).

Cumbernauld, Kilsyth & Kirkintilloch East likely to be an open selection so that could pave the way for an all women shortlist in Airdrie & Shotts. Would certainly put the cat among the pigeons there!

Look out for other Labour held Central Scotland / Glasgow seats coming up for grabs before the next General Election too.

Re: Reid to step down as MP (#9)

"Donna Morris (already being touted heavily for the East Dunbartonshire seat but may want something closer to home turf"

or something safer....

Re: Reid to step down as MP (#10)

ops, Joanne Milligan not Donna Morris...I cut and pasted the wrong name.
