Affiliates and Parliamentary Selections

I am concerned that many affiliates are not aware (or simply chose to ignore) the fact that they have the option of three nominations, a woman, a BME and a white male.

The failure by many, most probably all affiliates, to only nominate one candidate, does not comply with the Labour Party’s equal opportunity aims.  Most affiliates are Unions and arguably are the reason for the need to have a positive agenda in the first place. It would be interesting to know (apart from those areas where Asians are in a substantial majority) how many affiliates have chosen a BME or in non - AWS seats, a woman.

Re: Affiliates and Parliamentary Selections (#1)

that's not quite true Archbold. None of the nominations are designated for "white" candidates. It's one woman of any ethnicity, one man of any ethnicity, and one BAME nominee of either sex.

Re: Affiliates and Parliamentary Selections (#2)

In practice the nominations from CLP wards are generally made as I have written, but I take your point.

Re: Branch & Affiliate nominations (#3)

Sorry, Alex, actually you are wrong.

There is a nomination for a candidate of any gender, or race, [the open nomination], one for a female candidate of any race, and one for a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic candidate of any gender.

Because CLPs take the BAME nomination first, then the female nomination, they often feel that they have done their bit for diversity and reserve the open nomination for "a white man".

There is nothing preventing CLPs from nominating three BAME women !!

Re: Branch & Affiliate nominations (#9)

I think Alex is absolutely right on this one...and it would look extremely awkward for any CLP to come up with a shortlist of 3 BAME women. As a BME male I'd be up in arms and be asking for an explanation.

Re: Branch & Affiliate nominations (#10)

On the rules, I was obviously wrong - one nomination is of course open

Re: Affiliates and Parliamentary Selections (#4)

In Ealing Central and Acton, the GMB and CWU both made three nominations, whilst AMICUS, UNISON and USDAW made only one

Re: Affiliates and Parliamentary Selections (#5)

Thanks ECACLP. Do you know if any of the nominations were BME or female? Does anyone else have information on Affilliate nominations?

Re: Affiliates and Parliamentary Selections (#6)

The GMB and CWU both nominated a BME woman, a BME man, and a white man (five different people).  Amicus and the Co-op nominated a BME woman, whilst Unison and USDAW nominated a white man each (three additional different people).

Re: Affiliates and Parliamentary Selections (#7)

Am I the only person who finds this whole racial and gender-based selection shocking and patronising?

Especially in London seats where there is little chance of finding prejudice against either?

Re: Affiliates and Parliamentary Selections (#11)

I found that when looking at details of applicants  for my CLPs selection, my main concern was what experience they had. Fortunately we have a good mix apply.  They are all interesting people. I long for the day when we see people as people and stop trying to label them. I look forward to meeting an interesting selection of people with varied life experiences at my CLPs hustings.

Re: Affiliates and Parliamentary Selections (#8)

I am sure you are not, but this is an old argument. As we have a positive agenda lets try and ensure it is used properly.
