Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#1)

Well done Yasmin!  Hopefully our first British Pakistani female MP!  Brilliant!

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#2)

Congratulations! A step forward for all Muslim women; hopefully they can now come out of the shadows of their principlely male dominated communities..

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#23)

By means of which logic, every time David Cameron gets re-elected I, as a white man, ought to be overjoyed. I hope Qureshi is a good MP. I know nothing about her politics. But if it is a step forward for anyone, regardless of skin colour or religion, it will be simply because she is a good MP. At the moment I'm increasingly despairing at the infection of the supposed left/ centre-left with (arguably deeply right-wing) group identity politics. As for 'their' male dominated communities: that is Islamophobic nonsense which shows just how superficial trendy race politics can be. There are more or less progressive Muslim 'communities', just as there are more or less progressive groups of Christians, humanists or whatever.

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#3)

According to Bolton News, the order of elimination was: Richard Jackson, Akhtar Zaman, Julie Hilling and Nargis Khan. In the final round, Qureshi outpolled Meagher by 17 votes

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#4)

Congratulations Yasmin.  I'm a little surprised that she won this seat - she must have worked really hard.  Also a bit surprised that the party membership is so low (250). A good boost to representation in Parliament.

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#5)

How many rounds were there Andrea?

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#6)

The Bolton News full paragraph was:

"First to be knocked out was Altrincham vet Richard Jackson followed by Bolton councillor Akhtar Zaman, trade union organiser Julie Hilling and Hackney councillor Nargis Khan. In second place was constituency chairman, Kevin Meagher.

Ms Qureshi won by a margin of 17 votes"

If no-one reached 50% until final round/stage/don't know the correct term, it would mean 5 rounds/stages/...I think. I think the paragraph implies that they went on until Qureshi and Meagher were the only one left in the race.

It looks as there're some over-reactions:

Thanks

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#8)

Yasmin is also a member of the LabOUR Commission which has set out detailed proposals on Labour Party renewal here:

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#9)

I think that this is a fascinating result. A few weeks prior to the closing date for applications I had a long conversation with Brian Iddon on the phone. At this stage I was 'thinking' of throwing my hat in the ring (I didn't) and had already spoken a couple of times with Kevin Meagher (in his capacity as CLP Chair). I was also aware that Blair's speech writer, Phil Collins, was interested and, as a 'local' lad (Bury), he was confident of getting on the short-list (he didn't). Brian Iddon was certain that the CLP would pick a local candidate - it didn't!

I think this could be really good news for Stephen Twigg in West Derby.

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#10)

Yes, send in the parachutes....

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#11)

Mike, I can't see the significant parallels between an anti-war Asian woman being selected in Bolton and a Blairite ex-minister trying for a seat in Liverpool.

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#12)

Bolton SE does NOT have a history of selecting outside candidates and neither does Liverpool West Derby. I think Stephen Twigg has an excellent chance in West Derby - and desevedly so, he was a good MP and a very good Minister, I hope he returns to Westminster as quickly as possible.

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#13)

I thought Alex was trying to get onto the West Derby shortlist (from what I remember) if so shouldn't we be supporting him?

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#15)

Wasn't Stephen Twigg the MP who opined the Party should be massive, but passive?

Members in West Derby will no doubt be mindful that the Party is diminished, but not finished.

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#18)

I didn't get any nominations in West Derby so I'm obviously out of the running. The shortlisting meeting is on Sunday and Stephen looks to be in a very strong position.

At a guess, I would say that Ros Gladden also has a chance.

Bob will be on the shortlist automatically and I think Stephen too, having nominations from more than half the CLP.

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#14)

We are all anti-war; stand up anyone who is pro-war.
If Brown went to the country on a 'troops out by Xmas' ticket tomorrow, we'ed be returned with a thumping great majority.

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#16)

Well Done Yasmin

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#17)

Who was selected for shortlist forWest Derby?

Re: Liverpool West Derby Shortlist (#19)

West Derby Shortlist of 6 decided today-
Stephen Twigg, Cllr Roz Gladden, Bob Wareing, Martin Cummins (local activist and ex-councillor), Cherie Hill (?), Floyd Millen. Selection on 16th Sep. Both Twigg and Wareing stood yards from each other at vigil for Rhys Jones in Croxteth Park (in heart of seat) later in the afternoon.
Twigg, Gladden and Wareing are only ones with realistic chance according to grapevine. It is possible Bob could sneak it on the votes of those local activists who don't want the other two and who may fancy a second crack when he eventually does retire willingly!

Re: Liverpool West Derby Shortlist (#21)

"Cherie Hill (?), "

she's a former councillor in Ellesmere Port and Neston

Re: Qureshi wins Bolton South East (#22)
