Early election?

With Labour having a reasonable lead in the opinion polls recently it is hardly surprising that speculation has increased on the prospect of an early election.

I had largely discounted these rumours as I doubted that the party could afford an election in the near future. However this report on the BBC quoting Party Vice Chair Martin Salter is worrying, suggesting the possibility of an election this autumn.

Now I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but there has to be grounds for concern that the tactics adopted by the party machine in Nottingham South and Calder Valley reported elsewhere are part of a scheme to prevent the selection of socialists in winnable seats. I note too that the recent list of selections posted on Labour Home is largely one of seats that are not especially Labour friendly. If the PLP becomes even less like the party in the country in terms of the breadth and balance of views in the coalition that is the Labour Party, then surely there is danger of trouble similar to that which blighted us in the late '70s and early '80s.

So my message to the party leadership is don't call an early election and allow CLPs to select the candidates of their choosing, not yours.

Re: Early election? (#1)

remember people the leadership needs you much more than you need them! for what its worth i think rank and file socialist labour party members should start letting the party, which is becoming more detached from the grassroots labour membership. that they intend to  start standing up to them, instead of acpecting there debate stopping discipline, which has all ways been a fault of labour, make them enter in to debate. rember without our money they would have no party

Signed Newright, who's much more left, then you may think!

Re: Early election? (#2)

And today in the Telegraph Brown is urged to call an early election by Philip Gould. Looks like we'll be marching toward the sound of gunfire soon, comrades.

Re: Early election? (#3)

I was told this week that less-than-subtle hints have been dropped to the PLP to expect a May 08 election to co-incide with the locals.
