Who cares.  A disgraceful selection.

Re: Sharma selected in Ealing Southall (#2)

Dear God why? Why o why? Nirwal would have been twice the candidate. This could turn out to be a real political suicide for us.

Re: Sharma selected in Ealing Southall (#3)

A direct consequence of Vaz getting onto the NEC and then into this selection panel.

Re: Sharma selected in Ealing Southall (#4)

This is the last thing we want, a split constituency party.
We just have to grin and bear it, GOTV and get Sharma elected. The postmortem comes after. The main thing is to see off the Lib Dem threat.

Re: Sharma selected in Ealing Southall (#5)

If Gurcharan Singh stands as a independent now he will win.

Re: Sharma selected in Ealing Southall (#7)

No way. He mustn't. His name will be dirt if he does.
He must endorse Sharma.

Re: Sharma selected in Ealing Southall (#9)

I have just seen the Labour in Ealing Southall site and read the letter put out by the Sikh spokesperson. I can understand their dismay at this 'fix' of a selection. by Watson and Vaz, but I would urge the Sikh community not to divide the Labour vote. The by-election is crucial in maintaining the Govt's credibility. This selection was hastily arranged to capitalise on the Brown 'bounce.' Sharma is in reality a continuation of Piarha Kabra, the similarity is quite amazing, even down to his appearance. When the next election is called, I think within a year, it has to be an all woman shortlist. And I too would like to see a turbaned Sikh in the Commons, one day. The danger in splitting the Labour vote is that it will let the Lib Dems in, or worse the Tories with their arrogant Tony Lit, and no one in their right minds wants that. So I urge Labour members in Southall to be patient and stay united behind Sharma. Your time will come.

Re: Sharma selected in Ealing Southall (#11)

There are 3 Independent Singhs. Why? Is there any difference between them? Good to see a sprinkling of weirdos: Proclaim Christs Lordship, the English Democrats and OMRLP whoever they are, and of course UKIP. I think the ones to watch though are Respect who could steal away a lot of votes from Labour and of course the Lib Dems and Tories.

Re: Sharma selected in Ealing Southall (#12)

1 of the Independents (Gulbash Singh) was a Tory candidate in 2006 locals.
Jasdev Singh Rai is the director of the Sikh Human Rights Group.
Don't have a clue on the third Independent.

OMRLP is the Official Monster Raving Looney Party.
The Respect candidate lives in Richmond Park even he has stood in Ealing before. The UKIP candidate was born in India, but he lives in Cardiff (and his previous electoral history is quite Welsh: he stood in Bridgend and in the Rhondda)

Re: Sharma selected in Ealing Southall (#6)

Does anyone want to fill the rest of us in on the whole story? I may have heard bits and pieces from people (Iain Dale, of all people), but it's still quite confusing.

Re: Sharma selected in Ealing Southall (#8)

According that awful journalist that is Kevin Maguire (Daily Mirror associate editor and Brownite poodle) everything is sweetness and light for Labour:

A more sensible account of things seems to come from this morning's Times:

'Cameron takes gamble with milionaire who's been a Tory for 10 days':

Re: Sharma selected in Ealing Southall (#13)

The Evening Standard is reporting that 5 Labour councillors, led by Gurcharan Singh, have defected to the Tories!!!!
