Could a gay candidate take on Ken Livingstone?

Andrew Boff may be the only serious challenger to Boris Johnson and a gay candidate would add an interesting element to the primary- there's over a million LGBT Londoners to reach.

PinkNews has an interesting interview with the openly gay Andrew Boff.

Re: Could a gay candidate take on Ken Livingstone? (#1)

I've never thought that gays vote for other gays. Treating us like a voting bloc is a mistake.

Boff and Boris are two Tories, that's all I need to know. I don't care which one wins their nomination we'll still have to deal with their BS during the election campaign.

Re: Could a gay candidate take on Ken Livingstone? (#7)

I thing it is demeaning to consider the pink vote as being a 'politics within politics' block who will just vote for anyone as long as they are gay. Playing the gay card is just cynical vote-grubbing in the 21st century where we have out-gay politicians and government ministers who choose not to play that particular line.

Why can't he just stand as a Tory and be bashed purely on those grounds, rather than try and corral the gay London vote as "hey look guys, I'm one of you!"

Re: Could a gay candidate take on Ken Livingstone? (#10)

He may get some right wing homosexuals who were previously put off by the Tories gay sceptic nature but, otherwise it is tottally unimportant in Modern london

Re: Could a gay candidate take on Ken Livingstone? (#2)

Couldn't care less whether he's gay, straight or Australian. He's a Tory and that automatically means he doesn't deserve to win.

Re: Could a gay candidate take on Ken Livingstone? (#3)

gay candidate so what who cares who some one sleeps with, i don't. if the candidate got some thing worth voting for yes let him stand but just co's hes a creampuff, why should we care.

signed, Newright putting the left back in to labour.

Re: Could a gay candidate take on Ken Livingstone? (#4)

Why are there homosexuals in the party that introduced Section 28???

Re: Could a gay candidate take on Ken Livingstone? (#8)

He is, the author missed out that the most senior openly gay police officer in the country is attempting to stand for the liberal democrats. should be interesting though I don't think it matters in a place like london nowadays whether your gay unless of course you simply get labelled as the gay candidate and are unable to get your issues across.

Re: Could a gay candidate take on Ken Livingstone? (#9)

Because they are conservatives. Sure they may reesent the actions of the sour tories but at heart they are right wing and thus the conservatives are their natural homes even if there is quiet homophobia among some members.

Re: Could a gay candidate take on Ken Livingstone? (#11)

Interestingly I have a friend who is gay and also a cyclist who has always voted Labour in the past but who welcomed the development saying that this time there were real alternatives to Ken - either he can vote for a gay man (Paddick) or a cyclist (Johnson) or Ken who he perceived had done very little for either cyclists or gay people.
