Councillor Bassam Mahfouz selected for Ealing Central

Ealing Central and Acton selected local Councillor Bassam Mahfouz as their PPC for the forthcoming general election.

Councillor Mahfouz, who won the most nominations from the wards, comfortably won the selection contest yesterday. He is of Lebanese heritage, and currently works for Ealing North MP, Steve Pound.

He becomes only the second ethnic minority candidate to be selected in a winnable Labour seat for the next election.

Under the new boundaries, Ealing Central will be ultra-marginal, and we will have to win it to ensure that we stay in power.

Bassam grew up and lives in Northolt.  As a local resident and councillor, he is a governor at his former school St. Raphael’s RC Primary and is Chair of Governors at Mandeville Special School.  Bassam is also Ealing Labour’s Spokesman on Transport & Environment.

Congratulations to him.

Ethnic minority representation has dropped down the Labour Party agenda again, and it is good to see that some opportunities still exist for BAME candidates to come through the system.

With Walthamstow likely to be an All Women Seat, what are the chances of candidates like Seema Malhotra, Sonika Nirwal or Jan Etiennes being selected there?

No BAME woman has EVER won an AWS in a winnable Labour seat.
