Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS AS THEY COME IN (#1)

Not good for "Call me Dave" if true but only by a couple of thousand? Not for Labour either...

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS AS THEY COME IN (#2)

I've heard pretty much the same about Ealing Southall although the Labour majority is less than a few thousand.

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS AS THEY COME IN (#3)

Consensus seems to be that Labour have retained Ealing Southall with a reduced majority of around 2,000. Lib Dems second and Tories third.

Bad news for Cameron - the Tories ran as "Cameron's Conservatives" down there.

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS AS THEY COME IN (#4)

In Southall it looks as it is pretty close between Lab and LD according to SKy

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS AS THEY COME IN (#6)

Labour's vote in Sedgefield down from 18,449 at the last General Election.  But I guess that is down to the low turnout and the fact that it's by-election and people always give the Government abit of a kicking especially one that has been in for 3+ terms.

Bad for the Tories that they came 3rd and it shows a lack of progress in the north.  I guess Ming fights for another day, looks like a good result in Sedgefield for them and possibly in Ealing.  I think the people most despondent about this will be the likes of Nick Clegg and co who would have been hoping for the Lib Dems to finish badly in 3rd place in both seats and a coupld of bads polls, then they could mount a leadership bid.

Is it in our interest's for Ming to stay?  Or would we benefit from a younger Lib Dem leader that challenged Cameron?  Tricky one.

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS AS THEY COME IN (#7)

"I guess Ming fights for another day, looks like a good result in Sedgefield "

A decent result for LDs, however considering there was the 10% of Reg Keys up for grap this time, I expected them to poll more than 20%

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS AS THEY COME IN (#9)

It's impossible to win huge majorities in by-elections. Our result was very pleasing overall, especially since the Tories have dropped down to third.

Ming will definitely stay after this, which I would think is good for us. LibDems are by-election specialists but when it comes to the general election, Ming will sink them like the Titanic. I'd rather have him in charge of them than Clegg.

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS AS THEY COME IN (#8)

Lab candidate, Harriet Harman and Joan Ryan just arrived in Southall...HH and JR looked very relaxed...

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS AS THEY COME IN (#10)

Funny watching Shapps trying to spin the Tory woes to the media. Did they win a by-election in the Cleveland ward as well?

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS AS THEY COME IN (#11)

yes, they held a council seat in Cleveland.
In other local byelectio news, Labour gained a seat in Rushmoor.

Southall seems a Lab hold now...with LD and Con fighting for second

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS AS THEY COME IN (#12)

It looks an absolute mess in the town hall. Its been handled in typical Ealing style tonight. The aftermath in the papers will be very interesting.

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS AS THEY COME IN (#13)

It's a bit of shame the so-called cash for honours investigation concluded today and will overshadow the results, I guess Cameron will be thanking his lucky stars.  No doubt Ming will be cursing his luck that a good news for him will be overshadowed by the fact that no charges will be brought against anybody.

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS - LABOUR WIN BOTH (#14)

Labour wins Ealing Southall - 5,000 majority

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS - LABOUR WIN BOTH (#15)

It wasn't even close!

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS - LABOUR WIN BOTH (#16)

A more comfortable result than I thought. Its a good base for us to increase the majority further at the next election.

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS - LABOUR WIN BOTH (#17)

Pretty bad for Cameron given he put so much into the Ealing Southall seat, I think he even had 'Cameron Conservatives' on the ballot paper.  Shall be interesting to see what the press reaction is, will the Yates/CPS stuff overshadow everything for the next 3/4 days?  Will the Telegraph/Daily Mail go after Cameron?

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS - LABOUR WIN BOTH (#18)

Excellent result in Ealing Southall. The Tories got 22% of the vote which is absolutely dire.

That's far better than I was expecting. Cameron won't be getting much sleep tonight I bet.

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS - LABOUR WIN BOTH (#19)

I popped over to ConHome to look at how happy the tories  were. It seems not very. One of my favourite quotes is

"Slam dunk for Labour tomorrow then!"

before lots of them call for Cameron to go! More here

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS - LABOUR WIN BOTH (#20)

Same here; much better than expected. But there are lessons to be learnt. I was afraid that the Libs Dems might take it at one point. The Tories had a bad night.

BNP in Sedgefield (#21)

Anyone know the BNP story in Sedgefield? 61% of the Tory vote, and a fifth of the Labour vote - the bad news of the day. The National Front only had 253 votes in 2005, so this looks very unexpected. Is it simply the BNP got very organised for a by-election?

Re: BNP in Sedgefield (#22)

It's a very sad story. I think they might use this result as a springboard for a large presence in the North-East. As Phil Wilson said last night, its something that needs to be combatted before the general election.

Re: BNP in Sedgefield (#24)

Not just organised, they were pouring people in from all over the country, including the Leader of their group on Barking and Dagenham LBC, but a stronger candidate as well - doesn't scare the kids so to speak!

Also I think they were National Front in 05, which would mean no money and no organisation compared to the BNP.  Not a major worry if we don't get complacent.

Re: BNP in Sedgefield (#25)

Nick Cohen raised a very good point, when he said that the BNP were pleased that RESPECT were doing well in Tower Hamlets, because they can spin this as 'RESPECT (The Muslim Party), is being elected by Muslims setting up their own voting bloc', because the BNP can counter this in neighbouring Barking and Dagenham as being 'The White Party'. We need to re-engage with working class East Londoners, many of them feeling disheartened by what they feel is a lack of a trade-union movement. They are being leached upon by the Far Left and Far Right. We don't just need to beat RESPECT in Bethnal Green, we need to beat them by a landslide, and I think a more social-democratic/ democratic-socialist concencus may be the way to do this. This may then stem the flow of voters to the BNP.

Re: BY-ELECTION RESULTS - LABOUR WIN BOTH (#23)

The Sedgefield result is more or less what I expected: a Lab hold with a reduced but comfortable majority.

Southall was better than what I expected. The campaign was a bit "strange" and there were quite a lot of variables whose effects could have been difficult to predict
