Streatham Selection & Walthamstow Selection

Does anybody know who the leading candidates for the Parliamentary selections in Streatham and Walthamstow are?

Streatham (#1)

In Streatham Steve Reed (Lambeth Council Leader) is in the run (and he's the Amicus backed candidate).

Re: Streatham Selection (#2)

There will be lots of good candidates for the Streatham seat.  Local GLA member Val Shawcross is popular, local bme activist Chuka Umunna is very good.  Other local members include Alan Johnson's Special Adviser Mario Dunn and long-time activist Alan Davidson.

There are loads of councillors including most of Lambeth's cabinet.  These include Steve Reed, Lib Peck, Donatus Anyanwu, Mark Bennett, Jim Dixon, Kingsley Abrams and Dave Malley.  And then there might be outsiders - Oona King, Steven Twigg and Jack Dromey have all been mentioned.

Re: Streatham Selection (#3)

Lets hope Chuka gets it.

Re: Streatham Selection (#4)

If Steve Reed is going for it I'd assume it's in the bag. Shame its come a couple of years too early for Lambeth councillor UNISON Race Equality Officer Pav Akhtar.

Since the AWS has ruled Luke Akehurst out of the race in Walthamstow I imagine Laura Bruni - local CLP Secretary and former staffer for both Bernie Grant and John Cryer - should have a strong chance.

I imagine Neil Gerrard would want Laura nominated although he is staying out of it by all accounts.

Re: Streatham Selection (#6)

Go  Laura!

Re: Streatham Selection (#7)

I also read Stella Creasy mentioned as a potential runner in Walthamstow

Re: Streatham Selection (#8)

Stella has done some outstanding community work and is one of the strong contenders. It's unwise to second guess who the MP favours. Not sure he'll appreciate it.

Re: Streatham Selection (#12)

I heard the smart money was on Sonika Nirwal.

Re: Streatham Selection (#5)

"There are loads of councillors including most of Lambeth's cabinet.  These include Steve Reed, Lib Peck, Donatus Anyanwu, Mark Bennett, Jim Dixon, Kingsley Abrams "

Abrams is out of the race. Amicus backed Reed and so Abrams as a Amicus Panel member should stand aside according to their rules

Re: Streatham Selection (#9)

What do people think about the ethics of this?  Kingsley is a well-regarded black Lambeth councillor.  However, before any branch has had the opportunity to hear him and decided if we want him as our next MP (selection process and timetable not yet announced), because Amicus has jumped the gun and selected their candidate, he is now barred from putting his name forward.

I doubt that there were many if any Streatham members on the Amicus selection committee, yet by their actions they have denied those of us who are in Streatham the opportunity to make our own mind up about Kingsley.  We have too few bme potential candidates as it is.  I would be interested to hear other peoples' views on this.

Re: Streatham Selection (#10)

Well, two points:

First, i don't believe Abrams sought consideration by the Amicus Panel, which strongly suggests he isn't interested and;

Second, it's not obligatory to join a Union Panel to be selected - people choose to do so because they know that if they become a union-backed candidate in a constituency with a lot of branch affiliates (and even where there aren't) they get a major boost - at least in terms of being shortlisted; but if you hope for the good stuff from being on a Union panel you also have to abide by the conditions that union applies.

Abrams can still apply for Streatham if he wants - he just can't stand and remain on the Amicus panel.  That's fair enough really, isn't it?

Surely it's no less restrictive than being a Labour member and not being able to stand for election against a selected Labour candidate - you can still do it, but you'll put yourself outside the party in the process because those are the rules you choose to accept when you join.

I think he did...or Blink has totally got it wrong with reporting this news:

Re: Streatham Selection (#15)

Yes, I was speaking with Jim Dickson at the weekend, and both he and Kingsley were also interviewed by the  Amicus panel.  Apparently, there were at least another five local Councillors / members who are on the Amicus panel who did not make their shortlist.

Of course, anybody beaten at Amicus can re-enter the race, but they would forfeit Amicus support in the future - (and start their political career having broken their pledge not to run against the Amicus candidate!!)

Re: Streatham Selection (#18)

The thing we must all think about when selecting the candidate is 'can we afford the next Parliamentary Election to become a referendum on the council?' I fear this is a real problem with Steve Reed's candidacy.

Walthamstow Selection (#13)

The rules are quite clear on this.  If you are an Amicus panel member you must abide by the local regional political committee's decision on who should stand.  If you don't then you tecnically can't be on the panel.  I have always abided by this and expect othets to follow.

Re: Walthamstow Selection (#14)

I hear Dora Dixon Fyle has withdrawn from the Amicus panel so she can run in Streatham.

Re: Walthamstow Selection (#16)

I was just about to suggest that. I wish Amicus and other Unions would stop playing silly b****rs and not stop LP members from appying, just because they've happened to endorse their candidate. Its only an endorsement ,from a union, and shouldn't preclude others from applying for the seat.

Re: Walthamstow Selection (#17)

I think they have a point.  If they're going to put a lot of effort and money into supporting a candidate who they believe is the best to promote Amicus policies then they won't other (rejected) Amicus people running around spoiling that person's chance.  Personally I think the Amicus nomination's contribution to selections is overrated.
