Deputy contenders on Europe

The Labour Movement for Europe (LME) have published a handy booklet giving the 6 Deputy Leadership contestants the chance to declare their opinions and beliefs about Britain's relationship with Europe.

Re: Deputy contenders on Europe (#1)

When is this all over? It's beginning to feel like Groundhog Day.

Re: Deputy contenders on Europe (#2)

If it was anounced tomorrow that the election was cancelled and they weren't going to bother with a deputy leader, I wouldn't be especially bothered.

Re: Deputy contenders on Europe (#3)

We're lovin' it, lovin'it, lobin' it!

Re: Deputy contenders on Europe (#6)

I notice that most of the political media is bored rigid with it. Look at the Guardian website, for example: there's barely a mention. We've really shot ourselves in the foot here: the Tories got a boost because of the advertising that their leadership contest got them. But this low-key, meaningless beauty contest hasn't captured a scrap of imagination.

Re: Deputy contenders on Europe (#7)

Agree with that. To be very frank Labour has been very lucky that Cameron and the Tories have had there implusion over Grammar schools over the last two weeks. This has helped narrow the gap in the polls, without Brown and any of the deputy leadership candidates saying much. If the media had really focused on them I think people would have been horrified. Look at when some real attention was put on the deputy leadership candidates during the Newsnight debate, hardly Labour's produest moment was it? The FT had a good leader on Saturday about Brown: 'Macavity's moment' http://www.ft.com/cms/s/59c290a2-107c-11dc-96d3-000b5df10621.html Despite Brown's non-election and so-called one-man listening tour, we know nothing about his views on foreign policy (what's his view on Russia/Europe/China/India). What's his view on crime and justice? Also one side point if I hear the phrase 'win the hearts and minds' once more from Brown I'm going to scream it's meaningless. Is he going to personally walk barefoot to Kabul and preech prudence and stability is better than Islamic militancy? Rachel Sylvester has a excellent comment piece in today's Telegraph about Brown, much better than the gushing rubbish produced by Jackie Ashley in the Guardian. 'Brown has missed a great sales opportunity': http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2007/06/05/do0501.xml

Re: Deputy contenders on Europe (#8)

you're right Duncan. Had Brown been forced into a contest, it would have given him a chance to give HIS manifesto, his chance to tell us what he would intend to do as PM. And it would have given him a democratic mandate.

Re: Deputy contenders on Europe (#4)

I'd second that! I car'nt they it's capturing the immagination of the fellow students on my Politics degree (more scorn than anything). As for this Europe business, are any of the candidates going to say anything to upset Gordon? Will any of the candidates advocate joining the Euro? Will any of the advocate working more closely with Europe on defence issues? Or will get some simplistic posturing? I think we all know the answer.

Re: Deputy contenders on Europe (#5)

Quite.
