Tony & Hilary Benn - part 1 of 8

I was very chuffed indeed to be invited to Tony Benn's house to record Observer Political Editor Nicholas Watt interviewing Hilary and Tony Benn in their first interview together. They even made me a cup of tea!

The video's quite long so I have chopped it up and will be releasing it over the next few days.

Re: Tony & Hilary Benn - part 1 of 8 (#1)

Cool Alex, thank you very much for this.

Re: Tony & Hilary Benn - part 1 of 8 (#2)

Cool, looking forward to the rest of them.

Re: Tony & Hilary Benn - part 1 of 8 (#3)

Ah - Tony's fab. Looking forward to the rest of this. Must have been fun!

Re: Tony & Hilary Benn - part 1 of 8 (#4)

Fathers should be loyal to their sons, but as a socialist who talks to Tony each summer at Toldpuddle, I am gutted. Wiseman

Re: Tony & Hilary Benn - part 1 of 8 (#8)

Wiseman, why are you gutted? Having found out even more about this whole fiasco, I would imagine TB's views on Cruddas are unprintable. What was it he said "Dare to be a Daniel" . I really don't think JC falls into that category. He dared nothing..... I don't agree with Benn's positions on some things but one thing I reckon he does share with his dad is honesty and commitment to social justice. That doesn't mean I'll necessarily vote for him. I'll see how the videos progress...... And BTW don't forget one of TB's greatest friends was Tony Crosland.......who I suspect Hilary is closer to in terms of ideology than Tony Blair.....

Re: Hilary Benn (#10)

The one thing I will give Hilary credit for, is that he often says (although he is more New Labour), that Labour shouldn't be ashamed of being socialist.

Re: Tony & Hilary Benn - part 1 of 8 (#5)

Is it an endorsement?

Re: Tony & Hilary Benn - part 1 of 8 (#6)

Not on this bit of video, yet - but Tony has said he is supporting Hilary (I hardly think it's terribly surprising!)

Re: Tony & Hilary Benn (#7)

That really WOULD be "Bennites for Benn"

:)

Re: Tony & Hilary Benn - part 1 of 8 (#9)

I rather thought Tony Benn always treated Tony Crossland as a right-winger! But even Crossland, like Tony Benn, had the courage of his conviction. What I cannot appreciate among ALL the six Deputy Learship candidates is: (a) their lack of moral courage to admit that they made an opportunistic mistake in voting for the Iraq War (because they calculated that it'd be a successful bandwagon which they shouldn't miss, a la Robin Cook), and, (b) their variety of excuses which only go to show their reckless contempt of our intelligence! Hilary and some others effectively said (at the Newsnight debate) that there's no Rewind button in history, so let's just focus on the future - ie let's pretend to ignore even the present (of 100 deaths a day!)and the past (i.e. who let this genie out of the bottle). Will it wash that easily? Hitler, while exterminating the Jews, also fondly hoped that no-one will eventually remember it, and wrote: "Who remembers Armenia?" (i.e. the alleged massacre of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire). We expected more moral courage at least from pedigree Benn! Similarly, born-again leftists like Cruddas and Harman now gutlessly say that they wouldn't have voted for Iraq Invasion if they knew then what they know now. Are we so gullible as to accept this excuse at face-value? They could have, if they so chose, also known what Cook and many other Labour MPs (a la Corbyn) knew and therefore voted against the Invasion. Mandela was against it; even thr right-wing French president Chirac was against it. But all the six candidates CHOSE to listen to Bush and Blair. No, this opportunistic bunch cannot be compared with even the erstwhile right-wing of our Party. They all had political integrity. That's why even right-wing Labour leaders of the old like Kinnock or Hatterseley were against the Invasion because it was patently illegal (as Kofi Anan also pointed out).
