Congratulations to Gordon and Harriet - Commiseration to Alan

Still , a winner is a winner. Well done Gordon, well done Harriet. Nearly there Alan. Only 0.8% short. Overall, a good result for the Labour Party and the affiliate trade unions (Particularly UNISON Labour Link – who I think can show that they can deliver, not enough this time obviously, however we need to build on how we communicate with our Labour Link members). I am convinced that Gordon and Harriet will be a winning team for Labour.

haven’t seen a proper breakdown yet on how the MP’s, unions and Party members voted. There are already some bizarre interpretations of the results. I think that the polite term for this is “wishful thinking”. The Ultra Left (stress “Ultra”) has been completed marginalised and it has been demonstrated that is it has no meaningful support in the Party or its affiliate’s.

I'd like to also offer condolences to Hazel Blears. Judging from the famously collegiate Mr Brown's appointment of Harman as Chair, it appears she was unceremoniously sacked in front of the whole conference. Very classy.

Re: Commiseration to Alan (#3)

I hate the use of the word 'deliver' as though the Unions can be counted on 'fixing' the result by mobilising their members. On second thoughts, maybe that's exactly the way they went about it. That is why I am dead against this affilliate vote in principle and the multiplicity of votes flying around was an affront to democracy . This was a LP election. If you are a  member of the LP you will have your vote. OMOV. Keep the Unions and affilliates out.

Re: Commiseration to Alan (#4)

I also feel sorry for Hazel, she put up a feisty performance, unfortunately she was too closely identified as a 'blairite', and was proud of it, and suffered as a consequence. Hope she get a Cabinet post in DCLG.

Re: Commiseration to Alan (#7)

Swatantra
UNISON is constitutionally part of the Labour Party.  Remember, every affiliated member had a secret postal ballot.  I can accept that it was not right for some people to have 3 or more votes.  This is not just a trade union issue.  Hopefully this will change and in any future elections all members will only have one vote.  However, individual affiliate members have as much right to vote in elections as members (some pay more into the levy than the recommended amount for full membership)

Re: Congratulations to Gordon and Harriet (#2)

I don't think there are any Ultra-Left members within our ranks, but if you're suggesting the Revoloutionary Communist Party has infiltrated our ranks, that may be something worth looking into.

Re: Congratulations to Gordon and Harriet (#5)

hear hear.

Re: Congratulations to Gordon and Harriet (#6)

Indeed, well done to Gordon and Harriet - not my ideal team to lead us, but they won fair and square.

Re: Congratulations to Gordon and Harriet (#8)

Given that Hazel went first followed quickly by Peter, and that according to grayee this result somehow indicates that the 'ultra-left' have somehow been marginalised, does this finally prove that the grayee collective are actually to the right of Blears and Hain?

Re: Congratulations to Gordon and Harriet (#9)

nope, please note that there were no Extremists candidates, that is the point.  They were all very good, some I felt were better candidates for DL than others.
