Who do we want in the Cabinet?

Gordon Brown has indicated that he wants some non-Labour members in his cabinet, so which other party members would you like to see in the new Cabinet?

One proviso - I suspect they will still have to be members of either House...

I'll start with:

Rev Dr Prof Ian Paisley as Minister for Cornwall - this will stifle the revolutionary Methodist threat and discourage the locals from re-learning Cornish. Just in case the provo wing of Mebyon Kernow start getting any ideas!

Re: Who do we want in the Cabinet? (#1)

I suggest David Cameron as DPM, Ming in the Foreign Office, and then not bother with general elections in future.  They're very expensive and divisive, and surely it's better to show a united front behind the national government?
<p>
After all, there'll be an election for Mayor of London, that must be enough for anybody?

Re: Who do we want in the Cabinet? (#2)

How about a comeback for Lord Tebbitt  as Employment Minister in the interests of the nation. And Baroness Thatcher was pretty impressive this week. DPM? John Redwood for Defence Minister? A government of "all the talents" surely has to include all these three.

Re: Who do we want in the Cabinet? (#3)

Gerry Adams: Secretary of State for Defence
Mark Oaten: Secretary of State for Culture

Re: Who do we want in the Cabinet? (#4)

Why not go even further and ignore national boundries:

Kim Jong-il for Defence (the North Koreans know a bit about military build-up, so he's got to be a winner in this position)

General Pinochet (from beyond the grave) for Trade and Industry (he hated unions, so will be ideal for New Labour!)

and perhaps a position for Wojech Jaruzelski- he's not up to much these days.

Re: Who do we want in the Cabinet? (#5)

Cabinet Ministers being members of the legislature is only convention, I think.  I can quite easily see Jade Goody being brought in as Equality Minister (or Higher Education).

Seriously though, if you were one of the 300-odd MPs who nominated Brown (presumably at least 80-100 or so with pegs on their noses) how much would the news this week have browned you off?  After that parade of sickening sycophancy 'gi'z a job! gi'z a job!' Brown's hilarious response is, 'no actually I think I'll give it to people who will be trying to kick you out of your job in a couple of years!'  He's a charmer!

I think it's quite funny that the likes of Compass get stick from party loyalists for having members of other parties amongst their ranks, but such people are allowed to be in the Cabinet!!!

Lembit Opik for Culture Minister?
Galloway at International Development?
Perhaps this is just a way for Gordon to give his old mate Clare Short a Cabinet job?

Re: Who do we want in the Cabinet? (#6)

Nelson Mandela - Chair of the Party
Alan Greenspan - Chancellor
Al Gore - Environment
Shami Chakrabati - Justice
Alex Ferguson - DTI
Moira Stewart - DCMS
Bob Kiley - Health
Bill Clinton - Minister for Women
Ruth Kelly - Oh - she's Labour already, forgot that
;)

Re: Who do we want in the Cabinet? (#7)

apart from Kelly, and Kiley, that sounds like a great cabinet

Re: Who do we want in the Cabinet? (#8)

Robert Maxwell-Work and Pensions

Re: Who do we want in the Cabinet? (#9)

They'd have to find him first! How about Helena Kennedy as Lord or Lady Chancellor or even Attorney General. It might be one way of shutting her up and constantly slagging off the Government. And Frank Field in Works and Pensions and Glenda Jackson as Women's Minister and Melvyn Bragg at Culture Media and Sport.

Re: Who do we want in the Cabinet? (#10)

I should have added Shahid Malik, Dawn Butler, Sadiq Khan, Mohammad Kahlil, David Lammy and the MP for Gloucester who I have temporarily forgotten as junior Ministers, wherever.
And Angela E Smith at International Development, in the Cabinet.

Re: Who do we want in the Cabinet? (#11)

I won't even bother thinking about other parties being included as its a deplorable suggestion.

Dear Comrades

Wake up and smell the coffee we need to work as a united left to put pressure on the new leadership.
