Brown Intervenes in EU Summit to Protect Neo Liberalism

I just don't beleive it.

Brown ordered Blair to get back into the negotiations in the EU summit.

For what?

He was fearful that the french were undemining the free market. He was angry that Sarkozy of all people was seeking to "dilute" the operation of free competition in the EU market.

If Brown's starting point is to the right of Sarkozy, I warn you, we haven't seen anything yet.

Free trade is radical (#1)

Free trade is a radical position, if you knew any history you would understand that, the corn laws were supported by land owners, not those who wanted cheap bread.

Re: Free trade is radical (#2)

As with any policy, it was radical at one point or another. However, now it is merely orthodox.

Re: Free trade is radical (#4)

I think he means radical as in the movement rather than the noun.

We should all be supporting free trade. It lowers prices, which can only benefit the poorest - the people we're supposed to be most concerned about.

Re: Brown Intervenes (#3)

Considering Sarkozy is supposed to be conservative, it's rather odd that he's supporting protectionism - it doesn't make his free-market stance particularly credible.

Brown was correct to ask Blair to re-negotiate. Free markets and fair competition between countries has been an ideal of the EU / EEC for 50 years and it should stay that way. There's no place for nationalistic protectionism in today's Europe.
