Abdal Ullah for Wimbledon?

Abdal is an elected Councillor and Cabinet member in Tower Hamlets. He has been short listed as a prospective Parliamentary candidate for Wimbledon CLP. This is a Tory marginal.
He has always been very positive and constructive about trade unions. He’s a hard working canvasser and campaigner. Pity he is in the GMB.

Abdal is part of a new generation of Labour Londoners who can appeal across all sections of the community, young and old.  He would be just the sort candidate to help the local Party defeat the Tories at the next election
The hustings will be held tomorrow.  There are only 380 eligible members.  Every vote could count. Local activists tell me he is a “front runner”.

Re: Abdal Ullah for Wimbledon? (#1)

who are the other people shortlisted?

Re: Abdal Ullah for Wimbledon? (#2)

Sounds a good bet Wiseman

Re: Abdal Ullah for Wimbledon? (#3)

There are 3 other very strong candidates though so it'll be close. It's interesting to see so many people on here posting who seem to have good insider knowledge of the Wimbledon selection! I think it's a shame that if Abdal gets selected for Wimbledon he'll have to stop being a Cabinet member in Tower Hamlets - it seems like he's doing a really good job over there.

Re: Abdal Ullah for Wimbledon? (#4)

Dan Lodge is probably the favourite; Eleanor Tunnicliffe also competitive - both are relatively local coming from next door Wandsworth. Mark McDonald might have been in the running, but given he's been (and may still well be?) in Palestine for most of the selection process seems an outsider.

Re: Abdal Ullah for Wimbledon? (#5)

is it a 4 candidates shortlist?

Re: Abdal Ullah for Wimbledon? (#8)

Well officially it was six, but it's de facto four because apparently one of them has been debarred and as I say, Mark McDonald's been in Palestine for the past month. See: http://www.labourhome.org/story/2007/4/28/74858/5617

Re: Abdal Ullah for Wimbledon? (#9)

ah, thanks

Re: Abdal Ullah for Wimbledon? (#13)

I heard that Eleanor is also standing for Richmond and Putney and the result of Richmond should be out by now - any news?

Re: Abdal Ullah for Wimbledon? (#14)

Now I hear that Eleanor has been selected!

Re: Abdal Ullah for Wimbledon? (#6)

If the GMB down there is as hopeless as it is up here, then that's a pity. UNISON myself, although IMHO all unions should be backing this candidate.

Re: Abdal Ullah for Wimbledon? (#7)

Is he more to the left or right of the party?

Re: Abdal Ullah for Wimbledon? (#10)

Dan Lodge has been selected for Wimbledon

Re: Abdal Ullah for Wimbledon? (#11)

Congratulations to Dan and commiserations to Abdal and the others. I believe that this was the first seat he has gone for so it would have been good experience for him.

Re: Abdal Ullah for Wimbledon? (#12)

Good luck Dan Seems very confident on what I have heard. It can be a long road. But good luck to the lad Wiseman
