South West members denied hustings

The Party, in its wisdon, has decided only trade union members will be able to attend the one and only south west hustings for the leader and deputy. This is outrageous.

Not only will members from the far south west have to travel to Bristol (almost nearer to Glasgow than Penzance) but only trade union members are allowed.

Non TU members have lost any chance to hear the candidates debate.

Many older women live in the south west who were never employed so have no trade union - it is disciminatory.

Also many people in the south west have no nearby trade union and there is less membership than in other parts of the country.

Party members in the south west have few MPs and rarely, if ever, get the chance to hear the leadership debate issues.  This was the one opportunity to bring the debate to all the Party and not just the urban few.

So the party is turning its back on the members in the south west.  Nothing new there then - we lost more than half of our small regional staff to other regions in the last local elections and then are accused of not delivering for Labour - no wonder.

Re: South West members denied hustings (#1)

Having just seen this posting pop up I am hacked off. It is very unlikely I will be able to attend the hustings as I am a former member of the ASBSBSW and my trade union no longer exists, and I would be unsure of my status to attend this event. Also why the hell is it in Bristol - 180 odd miles away from my home. As a non driver (have you seen First Great Western recently?) I will struggle to get there - if at all. All this is in stark contrast to Harriet Harman who spent all day last Sunday in Devon and Cornwall meeting members.

Re: South West members denied hustings (#2)

Come on Labour - you can be more inclusive than this, surely? Even Exeter - in the middle of the region - is a long haul for many of us but at least it would be a teeny bit more fair? And why exclude non union members? Wildrose's point about women was good and what about young people? I thought we wanted to encourage participation - most of them haven't got round to joining a union yet. All in all: poor. 0/10 PS what sort of union is asbsbsw??? Sounds like BS to me.

Re: South West members denied hustings (#3)

A forerunner of the GMB. Former members now have equivalent status in the GMB. http://www.gmb.org.uk/Templates/Internal.asp?NodeID=90331

Amalgamated scocite of Black Smiths and Boilermakers & Shipyard workers No Bull...

Re: South West members denied hustings (#9)

Remove "Shipyard" and replace with "Shipwright". Sorry my error.

Re: South West members denied hustings (#5)

The more I think about it the more angry I am getting. This is the one time members get a chance to hear the leadership. My Mum has never been a member of a trade union but she's worked her socks off for the party. Hundreds and hundreds of unpaid hours and that's what she gets in thanks - excluded from hearing any of the candidates debate unless she travels more than 600 miles to London at 77 years of age.

Re: South West members denied hustings (#6)

It'll be such a good message to send to all the new members we sign up on the basis that they can vote in the leadership election. Thanks for the money and the commitment to the Labour Party - now push off, you can't come to the hustings if you're not in a union and able to travel long distances.

Re: South West members denied hustings (#7)

Well Labour, you have done it again, haven't you? Setting yourself up to look like idiots. Membership is low and the party treats non-union members like second-class citizens. What sort of message does this send to people, huh? Bureaucratic nonsense.

Re: South West members denied hustings (#8)

My mother also would be unable to attend as she has never been any member of a trade union. Although my father could as he is a retired member of the GMB. I just wonder what percentage of the membership this decision disenfranchise. Whoever has thought of this particular wheez has shown a remarkable lack of thought. At worst I think this could well be illegal under discrimination law, and at best can be described as "Dinosaurisum". (interesting word)

Re: South West members denied hustings (#10)

I am now told that the hustings start at 11am..So to get thear from the far south west it's an very early start. GGggrrrr..!!! As this is a messup from start to finish....Think it trough!
