NEC report from Ellie Reeves

This is a report back from Sunday's NEC meeting which I have circulated to CLPs. It also sets out why I am supporting Gordon Brown to be the next prime minister and leader of the Labour Party.

Dear Colleague,
I am writing to tell you about the NEC meeting we had yesterday where we paid tribute to Tony Blair and John Prescott and set out the timetable for the leadership and deputy leadership election.
We thanked Tony and John for all that they have contributed to the Party and the Country and heard moving addresses from both of them at what was their final NEC meeting.
The NEC has now set in motion the leadership election, which will culminate with a leadership conference on 24th June in Manchester. This is a really exciting time for the Labour Party and an opportunity for members to shape the future of our party. There will be hustings taking place around the country which will give members the opportunity to hear from all the candidates. Full details can be found on the Labour Party’s website at www.labour.org.uk/leadership/
Over the next three days, candidates will be seeking nominations for Labour MPs. Those who get at least 44 nominations will be appear on the ballot paper. In the meantime, CLPs have until 1st June to nominate a candidate, and they must give seven days notice to members that the nomination meeting will take place.
I will be asking my constituency to nominate Gordon Brown to be the next leader of the Labour Party. During my time on the National Policy Forum, the prosperity and work policy commission and more recently on the NEC I have met Gordon and I know that he would be a fantastic Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party. I was at the launch of Gordon’s campaign on Friday. Gordon talked about his vision for the future. He talked about constitutional reform and restoring power to parliament. He talked about affordable housing, education and the environment, as well as his commitment to talking to NHS stakeholders and consulting with them. His speech and more information about his vision can be found at www.gordonbrownforbritain.com
So I will be supporting Gordon and I hope you will too. And I just wanted to urge your CLP to have a nomination meeting and take part in this opportunity to elect the next leader of the Labour Party.
Best wishes
Ellie Reeves

Re: My latest NEC report... (#1)

Thanks Ellie. I think it's a really good idea to share these around. Do you know who gets to go to the special conference in Manchester?

Re: My latest NEC report... (#2)

Thanks! The leadership contest will be open to MPs and MEPs, party members, TU's and socialist societies, the NEC, NPF and party staff. Registration for individuals will take place on-line via members personal websites at labour.org.uk/membersnet. Delegate registration must be completed by 5pm on Monday 18th June. I understand that places are limited so get in quick if you want to go...!

Re: NEC report from Ellie Reeves (#3)

CLP secretaries can register on behalf of members if members do not have access to their MpURLs.
