"Blur" drummer stands for Labour

David Rowntree, drummer with the band Blur, is standing for Labour in a council by-election in the Marylebone are of Westminster. If you would like to help out, please email alen@mathewson.org.uk.

In the meantime, here's a short interview with David.

The world's most unintentionally sarcastic sounding interviewer?

Re: "Blur" drummer stands for Labour (#2)

Fair play to him.

Damon Albarn wouldn't have the balls to put himself on the line like that - bad for his image...

Re: "Blur" drummer stands for Labour (#3)

Well, I doubt Damon would be standing as the Labour Party candidate in any event, somehow...

...And to be fair, given that the Tories won 70% in Marylebone High Street ward last May to Labour's 15%, I'm not sure how on the line Dave's balls are, if you see what I mean.

Good on him for standing though - you never know, Marylebone may be a hive of Blur fans thus producing the 28% swing to Labour needed to win!

Re: "Blur" drummer stands for Labour (#4)

My point was simply to contrast "oppositionalist left" Albarn with "roll up your sleeves left" Rowntree.

BBC News has picked up the story:

Re: "Blur" drummer stands for Labour (#7)

Blur frontman Damon Albarn was among musicians seen as endorsing New Labour before 1997 - but has since become an outspoken critic of the government.

He reportedly declined one invitation to 10 Downing Street with a note saying: "I am no longer a New Labour supporter. I am now a Communist. Enjoy the schmooze, comrade."

Kind of proves my earlier point about Albarn. Posturing tw*t.
