Wimbledon and Putney selections

Sian Lloyd-Webber kindly provided the shortlist for the Wimbledon selection in the (long) thread on BAME candidates, so I've posted it here.

  • Eleanor Tunnicliffe
  • Mee-kuen Chong
  • Dan Lodge
  • Mark McDonald
  • Abdal Ullah

Hustings scheduled for 2nd June.

Interestingly, three of those shortlisted have also applied for Putney, and, assuming that that CLP wants a shortlist of six, given that only three women have applied, Eleanor and Mee-Kuen will be shortlisted there.

It's a rather interesting dilemma though: it's pretty near impossible for someone to campaign effectively in two selections occurring at the same time, and if they lose Wimbledon (which selects first) it will, I suspect, be rather hard to convince members in Putney of a commitment to that constituency.

Of course, it could be argued that anyone applying for more than one constituency will have that problem - what makes this slightly more difficult is that these are adjoining seats selecting at the same time where connections across the two boroughs are decent and people will know what's going on in both.

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#1)

Have we ever had any east asian candidates with a chance of winning? All I know is that the first east asian candidate to win was in the Northern Ireland elections in March.

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#2)

  1. Who's the third common (shortlisted) candidate please?
  2. Apparently Wimbledon members aren't bothered, they presume people will attempt at multiple CLPs.
  3. Tunnicliffe's also a candidate for Richmond, I heard.

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#3)

Sian, presumably q.1 relates to Putney?  If so they haven't shortlisted yet - their wards are still nominating at the moment. Shortlisting's in two or three weeks' time.

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#4)

Sorry, my mistake: I meant who's the third candidate common to both Wimbledon and Putney please?

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#5)

Dan Lodge has applied; though given his success in Wimbledon he seems to have been devoting all his attention there and not (yet) to Putney.

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#6)

Actually, Mark McDonald has also picked up a couple of the BME nominations so far in Putney, so there's four cross-over candidates.

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#7)

Strangely, I've also heard that the candidates are focusing more on Wimbledon than Putney, though in the former the Tories had a 2500 majority whereas in the latter only 1500. Can anyone shed some light on this please?

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#8)

My bet for putney is Floyd Millen.  He is in the centre politically.  He is a honest worker and is worth a bet, just missed out on Forest of Dean.  Would probably out peform the excellent Dan (who is doing well in Wimbledon).  Good luck to all.

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#11)

I applied for Putney and met Floyd at one of the meetings. I was very impressed with him indeed and I hope he gets a safe or winnable seat. I'd very much like to see him in parliament.

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#12)

Odd you should say that Wiseman - you must be privy to some local information I don't have, because I can't see Floyd finishing better than a very distant third in Putney, personally.

Also, rather (pleasantly) surprised you're so enthusiastic about a new Labour type like Dan Lodge: who you're right would be an excellent candidate for Wimbledon. Are you slowly seeing the light?

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#13)

we have 21% more than the third party in Putney, how will we finish a distant thrid?

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#14)

I'm talking about the selection, not the election.

There's no prospect of the Lib Dems beating Labour into third in Putney, even though if they worked it, they could potentially do a lot better in this constituency.

But with far higher priority Richmond Park and Kingston & Surbiton adjoining Putney, that's not likely.

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#15)

I have met Dan he is very talented candidate (needs more experience), but will do well.  When it comes to the list of candidates only Mark and himself, I think could win the seat.  Floyd has had a number of nominations and is not right and not left which means he has not been labelled.  This would make him a prime candidate to come through the middle.

Thanks

John Wiseman

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#9)

Well to be honest, if there's going to be a national swing from Labour to Tory next time it's unlikely either seat's going to be winnable.

But perhaps the candidates think Wimbledon's the better chance because it's trending Labour whereas Putney isn't; because the Tory MP for Wimbledon is unimpressive whereas Putney's has been headline grabbing and more of a "Cameron" Conservative (if actually failing to deliver anything for Putney), and because in Wimbledon the candidate won't be up against the "Wandsworth" effect?

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#10)

Sorry, of course the most obvious reason is that Wimbledon started it's selection first.

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#16)

"whereas Putney's has been headline grabbing and more of a "Cameron" Conservative "

IIRC she was a Liam Fox's supporter. But she's a woman and so they should pop her around in the media a bit as they don't have many of them (and Widdy and Ann Winterton aren't probably so appealing to swing voters).

I saw her debut at the dispatch box in the Commons and she was pretty unimpressive (she was up against Hodge, Greening started in a quite bullish way, but Hodge doesn't let people to bully her easily and she hit back).

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#17)

She seems to have disappeared from view in Putney too; she doesn't even have a website (or at least didn't last time I checked), she's done nothing on all the local issues she campaigned on in 2005 and she's remained silent on massively controversial local issues like the Council's attempt to close Wandsworth Museum, the De Morgan Centre and West Hill Library (two of which are in her constituency, all of which are massive issues for her constituents).

Not the best way to retain a seat, perhaps.  I suspect the Tories' outlook is that they've got this one in the bag - they probably think that about Battersea too - and are focussing all their efforts on Tooting.  Which is rather complacent if you ask me...!

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#18)

I hear that Mee-kuen Chong's Labour Party membership itself has now been (somewhat/somehow) suspended and her candidature from all constituencies automatically removed.

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#19)

If true this presumably has consequences for Putney as they've yet to shortlist: would I be right in assuming that given there are now only two women in the running for that constituency the CLP can now only have a shortlist of four?

Re: Wimbledon and Putney selections (#20)

Dan Lodge was selected as candidate.
