Share your local Tory stories

The Tories are getting better at spin - they're trying to make people believe they've changed, but the upcoming elections are a chance to remind people what they're really like.

Over the last few weeks, I have been campaigning with hundreds of people on the "Hope Not Hate" drive against the BNP. Together, we exposed the BNP's politics of hate and fear.

But now, with critical elections just around the corner, I wanted to focus on a more familiar and powerful political enemy -- the Tories.

All of us know about the Conservatives' history of public service cuts, rising poverty and record unemployment.  And while it's being skillfully hidden behind Cameron's rhetoric, we know that the Tories haven't really changed a bit.

I saw that for myself last week, when a local Tory candidate was caught attacking asylum seekers in terms that could have come straight from the mouths of the BNP.  The national Conservative leadership has refused to disown the candidate.

As activists, you all see stories just like this in your own local areas.  That's why I have set up a page on my website where people can go online and write about (or record) their own Tory stories.

This isn't going to change the course of the election - but it is a chance to remind ourselves what we're up against.  Click on the link below to join in.

Re: Share your local Tory stories (#1)

The conservatives are certainly evil John and they don't do anything but help boost the BNP in marginals.  We have four BNP candidates standing in our locals in St Helens.  We would appreciate help and advice.  One of our candidates is active in Amicus and our parliamentary panel and I am sure he appreciate help and support.  Please contact on che_30_uk@yahoo.co.uk or JWis221300@aol.com

Thanks

Re: Share your local Tory stories (#2)

This is a good initiative Jon.  The Tories haven't changed deep down and we need to expose this. I'm sure there are stories up and down the land that would demonstrate the true nature of their party.

Re: Share your local Tory stories (#3)

Have to agree.

There's some confusion about in the minds of the general public as to whether Cameron has actually changed the conservative party.

Of course, without any policy, there's no way of saying, when they have no policy! But the signs don't look good. Cameron's 'A-list' strategy for selecting new MPs has manifestly failed, and his rhetoric about rolling forward society always seems to point to reducing the state, in a rather dogmatic fashion.

Despite my unease with it, Tony Blair pulled off some pretty deep changes in the Labour Party, but I can't see Cameron reciprocating. We can't let him get away with that.

As long as we allow ourselves to think that there has been a real change, we lose that initiative.

They're just as nasty a party as before, just with a stupid new logo. It's time they were exposed.

Re: Share your local Tory stories (#4)

Too true. You can guarantee that they'll come up with the 'race card' at each election; so they haven't changed. Still the 'Nasty Party'!

Re: Share your local Tory stories (#6)

Well my local Tories are in Merton, and they regained minority control of the council last year. They make increases in recycling spending, but decreases in social services. So someone i know was made to quit her job at NCH, because of cutting in funding by the Tory council. NCH wages cost £20,000, and putting a child in care is £100,000, and the person who i knew managed to save around 5 kids last year from being put in care, which saved Meron £400,000. Good to see fantastic economic logic from the Merton Torie's.

Re: Share your local Tory stories (#7)

...you mean remind each other how awful the tories are. I think there are better ways to use our time than swapping war stories - lets get out there campaigning and tell the voters!

Re: Share your local Tory stories (#8)

unfortunately for my council, will have to wait another 4 years to campaign. We have to remind voters that the Torie's haven't changed.

Re: Share your local Tory stories (#9)

Only another three in Merton till the next elections if they manage to survive that long. They are a pretty dismal lot of Tories in Merton and their leader David Williams is out of his depth.

They are also busy massively increasing home care charges by over 600%, introducing further transport charges and cutting the special educational needs budget. They are also closing down the Bond Road Childrens centre which provides a service in one of the most deprived parts of the Borough

Re: Share your local Tory stories (#10)

I don't want this to sound like a callous attack on Cameron, but, it's ironic that the SEN budget is being cut across Tory councils, when Cameron's son has special needs.

Re: Share your local Tory stories (#11)

In Trafford 80% of the highways maintenance budget was spent on the Cheshire set wards of Bowdon, Hale, Altrincham. The remaining 80% of the borough got 20% between them. (2006/7). Even allowing for puns on 4 wheel drives

Re: Share your local Tory stories (#12)

Jon C - are you going to respond to any of these comments?

When you do, can you let us know when you first decided to be on the left of the party? We certainly hope you stay with us for a while.

Re: Share your local Tory stories (#13)

Ah - I see. So you definitely are a McDonnell fanatic. Good old factionalism! Whatever happened to 'Unity is Strength'?

Re: Share your local Tory stories (#14)

The only way forward is if the left stay united
