A new name for the House of Lords

There's not much to cheer about in Jack Straw's White Paper on Lords reform.  But there is a promise to consult on a new name for the upper chamber.  I'm sure we can offer some suggestions!

Here's one for starters - the House of Straw

The Supreme Soviet, perhaps?

Re: A new name for the House of Lords (#2)

Jack Straw's proposals are shockingly bad.
Redundancy for peers? You must be joking. They recieve no salary so they don't need redundancy money either.
And the Lords Spiritual still being allowed to stay? Ridiculous beyond belief.

In should be called the House of Senators and every one of them should be democratically elected by the British people. This is the ONLY way forward.

Re: A new name for the House of Lords (#3)

Lets call it the House of Cards.

Re: A new name for the House of Lords (#8)

Sorry, was that Cads?

Re: A new name for the House of Lords (#9)

Spot on, JR.

Re: A new name for the House of Lords (#4)

I think the name is a distraction - Let's call it the house of Lords for the sake of tradition, but let's not let any concession on the name be worth any compromise on the composition.

Re: A new name for the House of Lords (#5)

What about The Status Quo.

Down, Down, Deeper and Down.

Re: A new name for the House of Lords (#6)

The Lower House should be The Casino and the Upper house The Super-Casino.

Bicamer(on)al?

Re: A new name for the House of Lords (#7)

The Glass House?

Re: A new name for the House of Lords (#10)

Wouldn't work. They throw too many rocks.

Re: A new name for the House of Lords (#11)

The house of pain..No..Sorry! thats Lindy's place.

Re: A new name for the House of Lords (#12)

Let's call it the Senate. That's what they do in Italy where they have an upper house.

Re: A new name for the House of Lords (#13)

I don't care what it's called. But those that get elected to it - should not have a title.

Re: A new name for the House of Lords (#14)

Absolutely. We dont want fat old men, we want people we elected.

Too often, the only people who get elected are duff ex-ministers & non-entity backbenchers who were persuaded to make way for apparachniks
