Neil Gerrard to stand down

Neil Gerrard (MP for Walthamstow) has announced he'll stand down at next election.

He has been elected for the first time in 1992 gaining the seat from the tories. He held it in 2005 GE with a 23% majority over the Libdems.

Re: Neil Gerrard to stand down (#1)

That's a shame. I foundly remember the cloud of smoke that used to follow him around in Norman Shaw North.

Re: Neil Gerrard to stand down (#2)

Another Campaign Group member stepping down...

Re: Neil Gerrard to stand down (#3)

I know all local parties tend to love their MP, but Neil's hard work and unpretentious normality means he's in a different class. By being thoughtful about issues, he has made a difference, despite only a very brief period in "office" as Dawn Primarolo's PPS in 1997. He lasted about 5 months before rebelling and most of that was the summer recess.

Re: Neil Gerrard to stand down (#4)

he has been brilliant in his campaigns on HIV/AIDS and also his work for refugees. Hopefully his local party will select somebody with equal compassion and commitment.

I hope we gwt a good local candidate (#5)

rather than some creep oozing insincerity and  with a ready-prepared website.

Re: I hope we gwt a good local candidate (#7)

Who do you mean? Do you have the website address to share with us?

Re: I hope we gwt a good local candidate (#8)

Surely she doesn't mean http://www.neilgerrard.co.uk/?

The temerity: a leftie embracing modernity! He should be expelled from the Campaign Group forthwith! A website? Gadzooks! He should really be communicating with his constituents via chalk and slate, travelling the constituency on his square-wheeled cart pulled by a woolly mammoth! What is the world coming too?  Outrageous!

Re: Neil Gerrard to stand down (#6)

Very sorry to hear that Neil's standing down - he's a genuine guy, and a really dedicated worker for unfashionable causes on asylum, AIDS, and the justice system.

I wish him the best of luck in whatever he chooses to do next.
