LRC Merseyside Launch & Bob disappointment

Dear Comrades

Last week was the launch of the Merseyside LRC.  The meeting was quite positive and shows that the left is still strong within the party.  John McDonnell gave a good speech.  The one diappointing note was that we heard that Bob Wareing will stand as an independant.  I can't support him and I feel he is making a mistake standing, but he was treated harshly.  Anyway to the future and I feel there is a bright one for the left.

Re: (#1)

Wiseman it's a bloody disgrace Bob is planning to stand as an independent at the next election. It just shows that he was right to be deselected. If he was on the right of the party and had threatened to stand as an independent many on the left would be having a fit. But because it's Bob it's just a 'disappointment'???

The 80s saw the right peel away from the party when the going got tough. They were a disgrace just as in the last decade we've seen the left do the same (Galloway, Wareing and Canavan).

The worst thing is when it's all dressed up as political principle. It just so happens to coincide with a career setback.   You can't take your bat home when things don't work out for you personally - it's a movement and far bigger than any one person.

Re: Bob Wareing (#2)

If Wareing re-stands and loses he will be entitled to the generous payouts defeated MPs get - 12 months full salary I think?

If he doesn't stand he'd get nothing.

That's the sum total of his principles.

Re: Bob Wareing (#3)

No, I think the rule has been changed and there's no difference between defeated MPs and retired MPs in terms of their "resettlement grant" to adjust themself to "non parliamentary life". It depends on age and years of services (it goes from 50% to 100% of annual salary). In Wareing's case, considering his age and around 25 years as MP, it will be near 50%...he will immediately get his pension.
