Should the Queen call it a day?

She is 81 after all, surely she should enjoy her retirement and hand over the 'reigns' to Charles?

Hang in there Ma'am, otherwise we'll be lumbered with Charles and Camilla.

I thought this thread was going to be about republicanism, but it appears not.

There's little doubt that the Queen works very hard considering she's 81. I'm sure she'll hang on in there until at least 2015 to beat Victoria's record-breaking reign!

But from the moment Charles takes over, I'm sure Britain will be heading towards a Republic. I'm quite happy with the monarchy at the moment, but when the Queen dies, I think I'll look more kindly to the republican cause.

I agree, I hope Her Majesty hangs on for as long as her mother did. With any luck the throne might skip a generation and we go straight to King William and Queen Kate....

As a republican I dont support a role for the monarchy in our democracy. That said, the Queen is an outstanding public servant and I wish her well. I agree with Northern Monkey that Prince Charles will be a disasterous King and his reign will herald in a republic in the UK!

I hear she's a very nice girl but she doesn't have a lot to say

Given that the Tories destroyed our manufacturing industry and our own party is well on the way to breaking up our farming industry, the only income we'll get in the future is tourism.

We need her and Charles (and I remember a time during Labour melt-down when Charles was the nearest thing we got to an opposition party).
