Fanning the Flames of Hatred?

Before we "tut, tut" too loudly about the morons in Sudan who have locked up a volunteer teacher for allowing a teddy bear to be called “Mohammed”, we shouldn’t forget we have more than our own share of home-grown religious berks. I’m not this time referring to Galloway and his Respect Renewal but rather to the new Christian Fundamentalist website “MegaMosqueNoThanks”.

This site appears to be run by a certain Newham Councillor, Alan Craig, from the “Christian Peoples Alliance” (CPA). His name and telephone number is on the press release.

In one way I am reluctant to pay any attention to such ignorant and puerile nonsense. However, it’s hard to do nothing and stomach people in your own neighbourhood who simply want to inflame age old religious prejudices by trying to divide our communities.

Religion and race is a sensitive issue in Newham which is probably the most ethically mixed borough in Britain. However, by and large, despite problems, I think that communities in Newham interact and get on much better than elsewhere in Britain, especially when compared to some northern cities. This hasn’t happened by chance, but due to hard work by many local political, community and faith leaders. This is what makes these opportunistic attacks on the proposed mosque so despicable.

The simple facts of the matter are this, a Muslim religious group (Tablighi Jammaat) has been trying for some time to build a large mosque (seating for 12,000 - a little bigger than the East London Mosque in Tower Hamlets) on an isolated Brownfield site in West Ham, Newham.

As well as Craig, a number of others including the British National Party (BNP) have been deliberately provoking tension by spreading lies and misinformation about the mosque.

For example, Craig claims that even more Muslims will move into the area because of the mosque (untrue, but so what?), others have wrongly claimed that £100million of public money will be used to fund the mosque, reports have linked the mosque with the Olympics and deliberately exaggerating the size of the mosque.

There are claims and inferences that in some way Tablighi Jammaat supports terrorism and that there is a “threat” to the Olympic site?

This is irresponsible gutter rabble rousing at its worse.

Sensible decent Christians such as the Newham Christian Socialists Movement CSM have attacked Craig over this issue.

Does anyone seriously imagine that Craig would have opposed the building of similarly sized Christian evangelistic church? No, I don’t either. I really do not know how anyone who calls themselves a religious leader can be so upset and concerned about another faith building a religious centre, regardless of its size? Good luck to them if they can fill it! would be the response of most reasonable people.

By all means you can express your views, but send out press releases, to post videos of your self on YouTube, to pay for and set up a web site on the subject? There are plenty enough real issues of concern in Newham such as poverty, poor housing and gun/knife crime. Why is all of this of secondary interest to the building of some mosque?

I am afraid that I am left with the distinct impression that Craig is using his own followers, his electors and the media purely to stoke up his own ego and sense of importance. He is a squalid, grubby, tin pot politician who will do anything regardless of any cost in order to chase cheap headlines and notoriety.

Now, come to think of it, perhaps this post is about Galloway......?

Re: Fanning the Flames of Hatred? (#1)

Good post. I actually like the look of this new 'mega-Mosque' - it's modern and it looks as though it fits in more with other British buildings rather than having the minerets on top which are more suited to the Islamic world.

Re: Fanning the Flames of Hatred? (#2)

But i have yet to see the Christians running around with knives and swords shouting for the death of whites infidels and non Muslims, I have seen youth running around after the twin towers saying death to Americans and Blair. but it did happen, people keep telling me the Muslim threat is small tell that to the dead and injured in London.

No the threat is real are all Muslims involved of course not, but the ones which are well it's going to make life interesting.

Re: Fanning the Flames of Hatred? (#3)

The threat is small. More people are killed on the roads than by terrorists and its no thanks to the Security Services. Terrorists should be seen as deranged murders; deranged inthe same way as the  spate of murders on our streets and perpertrators of gun crime. You are as likely to be struck by lightening as being blown to bits by a home made bomb. Get it into perspective.

Re: Fanning the Flames of Hatred? (#6)

Hi treborc

....and your point relating to the building of this mosque is?  Err, sorry but such comments remind me of the rubbish put out by the Tory press about Roman Catholics during IRA bombing campaigns.

Re: Fanning the Flames of Hatred? (#4)

Hi

I think you are over-dramatising the situation, and perhaps ignoring some real concerns.

For example, you seem to have missed the fact that 2500 members of the local muslim community signed a petition against the planning application when it was submitted.

See

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,,1939889,00.html

Also, the "simple fact" is that the capacity of the East London Mosque is around 3000. Hardly "slightly smaller" than 12,000. It would be the largest capacaity religious building in Britian by about 300-400% (Liverpool Anglican Cathedral is next, I believe).

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3799353.stm

My opinion is that any religious building this size - is too big to fit in with the fine grained nature of London Community.

I hold no brief for Craig, but if you are accusing others of lying you need to get your own facts straight.

Bearing in mind the problems there been with Wahabi (Saudi hardline) influence in some places, I think any overseas funds would also need very careful examination. For example, would you want the Saudi King or government appointing trustees?

I'm sure that all these concerns could be addressed,  but they need to be considered carefully not dismissed out of hand.

Re: Fanning the Flames of Hatred? (#5)

Hi Matt

If you hold your nose (or perhaps not as the case might be) and use the link http://www.megamosquenothanks.com/ you will see that under FAQ Q6. They admit that the organiser of that petition has now “changed his mind” about the mosque.  Also if you then go to the “Times on-line” link you find that the petition was not opposition to the mosque itself but some inter-communal row about who uses it.

Also on Q4, of their FAQ you click on the link about funding and it takes you to the Government Office for London site where it quite clearly says that the capacity of the East London Mosque is 10,000.  I’ve been inside a couple of times and although I am not an engineer it looks feasible to me.

I really don’t understand your comments about the “fine grained nature”.....?

I am not being flippant but a mile or so away the Olympic stadium is being built which will hold (I believe) 80,000 people (then reduced).  Another mile away is the West Ham football ground capacity 35,000 and in the opposite direction Leyton Orient 9,250.  I could go on.

I have very little interest in sport, especially football and no belief whatsoever in any religion.  However, if I was a Muslim I would not understand how on earth people can be happy for huge sporting areas to be built and yet object to "my mosque"?  25% of people in Newham are muslims.

Yes, there may be concerns about Saudi influence, however as far as I am aware they have been funding pretty much all mosques for donkey years.  This is no good reason to oppose the mosque itself.

Cheers

John

Re: Fanning the Flames of Hatred? (#7)

I do not care if they build a mosque i am happy for them to build what they like so long as it meets the local planning applications. I do not want this government funding one faith so if it allows a Mosque to be build using government grants and funds then others can also join in.

But what does annoys me this year in my area school Christian themed plays are to be changed to either  soap themed plays or none at all. For the first time ever our lads school has deemed it better to have nothing, it has done this not to annoy and I quote the other faiths.

Not to long ago we were advised to stop flying national flags, then our council did not put up Christmas decorations, this has now gone but each year it seems we might offend some group or other.

I have yet to hear one Muslim family say anything about Christmas plays or religious studies in our schools, but Christmas plays have been part of our local schools for years. When is it that governments will stop trying people to mix, if we do not mix and join it how the hell are we supposed to live together.

Re: Fanning the Flames of Hatred? (#8)

Hi Treborc - Please check out the new Labourhome post on Christianphobia which I think answers your points.  In Newham the Union Jack is widely flown from public buildings across the year and there are Christmas lights and decorations along the main roads (same in Tower Hamlets)
