Cameron's Constituency Party admits to receiving Illegal Donations

"David Cameron's constituency party has admitted receiving £7,400 in invalid donations, it was revealed today. The Witney Conservative Association has agreed to forfeit the sum to public funds after initially banking the money."

"The money came from two illegal sources, as the benefactors were not on the UK electoral roll. The news will be embarrassing for the Tory leader, who has been scathing in his criticism of Labour over the "proxy" donors scandal."

You would have thought Mr. Cameron would have had the good sense to check his own house was in order before throwing criticisms at Labour.

As he said to the Prime Minister: "People will be asking themselves ... if he can't run his party properly, can he really run the country properly?"

Indeed.

Re: Cameron's Constituency Party admits to rec.. (#1)

I feel a sudden need to remind us all of the words of a reasonably prominent Tory.

Ignorance is no Defence

Not my view on the matter, but I'm sure the Tories will be standing by their position.

Re: Cameron's Constituency Party... (#2)

I just posted a comment on Guido's latest blog post and I encourage other LabourHome readers to do the same.

Since Guido called for the resignations of Harman and Wendy Alexander for their campaigns accepting illegal donations, then presumably our friend Guido will be calling for Cameron's resignation as well?

As you rightly point out, it was the Tories who argued that "ignorance is no defence". I quite agree.

Re: Cameron's Constituency Party... (#3)

Most importantly, why has this not been reported prominantly in the media?

Can you imagine what the reaction would have been if this was in Gordon Brown's constituency party?

Re: Cameron's Constituency Party... (#4)

Possibly because we the Labour party have abandoned spin in favour of a principled approach to dealing with the media, while the Tories are spinning like good uns.

Tom Scott donations to Tories (#5)

There is also the case of Tom R Scott giving £500,000 to the Tories in April last year, that Michael Crick is sniffing around.

His non-voting Guernsey father, Tom H Scott, has a long record of donating to the Tories via his UK company. But now that dad has sold his company, oddly his son has started making gifts to the Tories of amounts that exceed the value of his house.

Of course if son Tom R Scott, by any chance, is acting as an agent for father Tom H Scott, then the donation wouldn't be legal under PPERA! Which would be worse than the Abrahams situation, as Abrahams is a voter so can lawfully donate, but dad Tom H Scott cannot lawfully donate to the Tories.

Re: Tom Scott donations to Tories (#6)

Interesting. Hopefully we can nail him on this.

Even more stink of corruption (#7)

Obviously the Tories are engaging in Cash for Questions again

Bung them money and they will do anything you want. The Northern Rock fiasco is their latest wheeze, screeching long and loud for their hedge Fund donors who stand to be burned.
