Riverside (Bermondsey), Southwark By-Election - Tories Down 47%!

The results of the Riverside By-Election are out. Whilst the Lib Dems held the seat. Labour increased its vote and the Tories were hammered.

The results were:
Anood Al-Samerai – Liberal Democrat – 1,114
Cormac Hollingsworth – Labour – 691
Rahoul Bhansali – Conservative – 260
Amanda Penfold – Green – 122
Fernando Grace – UKIP – 49

Ballot papers counted: 2248 (12 rejected). Turnout was 24.7 per cent.
(Yesterday's by-election was prompted by the resignation the Paul Baichoo (Liberal Democrat) who had got 988 votes in 2006.)

Looking at the results turnout was only slightly less than that of the 2006 Local Elections, which was 26.9% for the ward, so that’s encouraging.

Whilst the Lib Dems increased their vote, so did Labour and the Tories came off worst. Here are the highest polling candidates from 2006 in Riverside:

Hollingsworth Cormac - Labour - 652
Stanton Phillip - Lib Dem - 1080
De Burgh, Hugo William - Conservative – 488
This means that the Lib Dems only actually picked up 34 votes over their best in 2006…. Cormac the Labour candidate increased his vote by 39 votes over 2006… but the Tories were roundly beaten… dropping from a high of 488 in 2006 to just 260 yesterday!! A 47% plunge!!

Re: Riverside (Bermondsey)... (#1)

Oops! Mark my words, the Tory lead in the polls will sink early next year.

Re: Riverside (Bermondsey)... (#2)

This result proves nothing at all.

Re: Riverside (Bermondsey)... (#8)

Come May next year when Boris gets trashed by Ken, you'll see things will start to get awkward for Cameron.

Re: Riverside (Bermondsey)... (#10)

Change the record.

Yougov says we are 13 points behind Tories (#3)

Meanwhile at a National level we have our largest gap on the Tories in the polls since the 1992 election.

Our poll ratings are as bad as the Tories were after Black Weds.

Brown has gone from a +48 to -26 rating.

I also read somewhere that we only have a 5% share of  councillors bigger than the Liberal Democrats.

Wake up and smell the coffee, we are heading for a massive fall.

Re: Yougov says we are 13 points behind Tories (#4)

Wake up and get out their knocking on doors is the real message.

Re: Yougov says we are 13 points behind Tories (#5)

You must be joking! Its freezing cold out there. Most of the public suffer from 'SAD'. Besides, they're all looking forward to their seasonal festivities. They'll be much more receptive in Spring. I guess politics is on hold for the next four weeks.

Re: Yougov says we are 13 points behind Tories (#11)

Campaign for what?

A PM who lists Thatcher as an idol?

42 days detention?

ID cards?

I am like a lot of activists who will no longer campaign until the party remembers its socialist principles.

Re: Riverside (Bermondsey), (#6)

"Tories down 47%" in meaningless by-election...whereas in the papers over the weekend, they ascend to 45% in the opinion polls, which would translate into a 100 seat majority.  Autumn election, anyone?

Re: Riverside (Bermondsey), (#12)

There is a big difference between a by-election with actual voters where they think about the issues, and an opinion poll where people react according to how they feel when asked the question.

The point is we can still take votes from the Tories.

Re: Riverside (Bermondsey), (#13)

Wilberforce

Agree on the first para, but the second...?  I really think you guys are clutching at straws!  I'll take a look through last week's local by-elections and pull out some examples of massive swings from Labour to the Tories...or then again maybe not.
