Confused Boris unsure about the buses

Boris Johnson has promised to keep free travel for some young people, but not others.  Is he promising to take away free travel from 16 and 17 year olds, or does he just not know what the policy is?

Yesterday’s London Paper (not online) had a piece so small even avid Boris Watchers almost missed it.  The paper reported that the Tories’ under-pressure candidate had said he would not scrap free bus travel for the under-16s.

Free bus travel for young people was brought by Ken Livingstone and the Tories in London have been trying to scrap it ever since.  They have been doing this because they say that young people are anti-social.  In fact, new police teams on London Transport have been cutting crime.

But the strange part of Boris Johnson’s statement is not that he seems to be trying to distance himself from London Tories on this policy – it is that his pledge only extends to the under-16s.  The free transport policy is actually open to under-18s.

Is he in fact pledging to scrap free for 16 and 17 year olds?  Or is it that he just doesn’t know what the policy is?  Is he promising cuts, or does he just not understand what he is promising?

Re: Confused Boris unsure about the busses (#1)

If the Boris were by any chance to get in then inequalities in the Capital would get worse.
