Economist: Boris worries Tories win or lose

Boris is damaging the Tories win or lose according to the Economist

The Economist has a commentary on the Tories today.  Amongst their analysis of the national picture, they set out the dilemma for the Tories in London:

One hazard is “Boris Johnson, the party's popular but disorganised candidate in London's mayoral election next May. Party staff are concerned that a lazy campaign ending in a heavy defeat by Ken Livingstone, the Labour incumbent, would reflect badly on Mr Cameron. Some believe a victory for Mr Johnson would be even worse, if he turned out to be a shambolic leader of Britain's capital”.

You have to wonder why they selected him the first place…  if he loses, he damages their party – and if he wins, he damages our city!

I think even the Tories realise what a massive blunder they've made in selecting Boris. It should give us a nice timely boost come May next year.

Wait for the ES headline 'Boris falls under bus. Tories seek new mayoral candidate.'

Re: Economist: Boris worries Tories win or lose (#3)

Does he keep Henley?  Or have they already selected a new candidate in his place?

Re: Economist: Boris worries Tories win or lose (#4)

"You have to wonder why they selected him the first place…"

Well, they did turn to him after Greg Dyke - broadly speaking, a leftish opponent of the government - had refused their offer to run as an independent.

Possibly something to do with scraping and barrels.

That said, I agree with the assessment that Boris is a threat to Ken before the election (and a possible threat to David Cameron after it).
