Right-wingers in rock

I have a post here over at Progress on the Spice Girls and politics including a link to their notorious Spectatpr interview from exactly 11 years ago (makes me feel old) when they came out for Major. They are also listed here in the Observer's list of right-wingers in rock but according to Wiki Geri switched to Labour for the 2001 election for a PPB that I have no recollection of having seen. Anyone know which way they swing now that (a la Led Zep) they are doing a comeback and have been endorsed by Ed Balls? Noel Gallager predictably denounced Blair not long after all the iconic photos.  Blair for his part worried that Oasis would trash Downing Street so only extended the invite to one band-member. Is Geri still "one of us" though?

Re: Right-wingers in rock (#1)

Is that the same "Geri" who was in one of our election adverts but not registered to vote? Anyway I don't think it matters who they support the're not Oprah. The Spicegirls thing I want to know is when is Spicegirls the movie part II coming out.

Re: Right-wingers in rock (#2)

never i hope attempt after their appalling first attempt. but if there is a sequel, then call it 'desperate or disparate housewives', since all have led a chequered career since. i still think they were instrumental in putting 'girl power' on the map and were an inspiration to a lot of young girls to succeed in a male dominated world.

Re: Right-wingers in rock (#3)

Do we really care who they support?  In fact, given the lack of popularity of Skeletal Spice (Mrs Beckham) I rather hope they come out for Cameron - that should put a few people off supporting him (a bit like Britney's endorsement of Bush in 2004)!

Seriously, I think, unlike Led Zep, the Spice Girls are so yesterday, that whoever they endorsed would fly so low under the radar it would be un-noticed by 99.9% of the population.

Re: Right-wingers in rock (#4)

HHHmmmm. They could always get out of it by claiming they were being "ironic". This is how Joy Division's Ian Curtis and Paul Weller wriggled out of their declarations for the Tories in 1979 as far as I know.
