Anti Semitism in the Labour donations row.

It's feeling nasty......

It could be just me (cue calls of it's you), but I'm feeling that in the media that there is a certain amount of anti semistism in the current raking over the coals that Labour is receiving.  All this talk of a 'secret donor', and the sinister way certain papers have potrayed Labour Friends of Isreal has got me thinking about it the possibility.

Anybody got the same feeling?

Re: Anti Semitism in the Labour donations row. (#1)

Anyone who thinks that people give money without wanting something in return needs their heads examining. That applies to the Unions, Ashcroft, Levy, Abrahams and the Friends of Israel.

Re: Anti Semitism in the Labour donations row. (#2)

True, but what has that got to do with my perception of the anti semetic tones of some of the media in the UK?

Re: Anti Semitism in the Labour donations row. (#3)

What makes you perceive it as specificly anti-semetic rather than anti-Israel?

Re: Anti Semitism in the Labour donations row. (#4)

It's partly due to the allegation about there being a 'secret' donor behind Abrahams. The implication being some kind of jewish conspiracy, with LFI in the frame. I was more refering to the tone of allegations, not overt anti semetism.

The LFI aren't Isreal, but have a substantial Jewish membership. I'm not sure how Isreal is even in the frame here, as really the only mention of Isreal is in the name of LFI itself. Isreal hasn't come into the debate, just an organisation representing it's interests.

Re: Anti Semitism in the Labour donations row. (#5)

... or it could be a general conspiracy whereby the Tories are laying these traps to catch us out; Skirting around 'loans' and hiding behind other names leaves us vulnerable. There could be any number of these still waiting to erupt at any time. That is why we have to have more openess and stricter laws which have to be followed. There are still questions to be asked about Ashcroft and his residency and this 'Midlands Group' supporting the Tories. I still have concerns about large donors donating very large sums of money to any Party, and the Unions must be brought in as well.

Re: Anti Semitism in the Labour donations row. (#7)

Talking of Tories laying traps, today's Observer says Tory HQ (Richard Hardyment) was researching the Ruddick and Kidd and north-east planning applications using FOI requests a month before the Mail on Sunday started revealed the story - the implication being this is how the papers got their first lead.

Re: Anti Semitism in the Labour donations row. (#8)

Oh I'm sure Tories were involved in snuffling this stuff out, but we shouldn't have laid ourselves open to it.

Re: Anti Semitism in the Labour donations row. (#6)

I certainly think there is an unpleasant, unsavoury tone to some of the comment on blogs and things, and it should be challenged wherever it emerges.  I don't mean that people shouldn't ask broad questions about how pressure groups might involve themselves in individual donations to political parties (all political parties, and all pressure groups for that matter) but the inuendo implied with some of the references to LFI is at best unhelpful and at worst grossly offensive.

Re: Anti Semitism in the Labour donations row. (#9)

I took the 'secret donor behind Abrahams' theory, because Abrahams seemed to have tiny corporate assets (£23k) and was obscuring his donations, as a worry that a foreign government might be behind this trying to buy influence in UK politics. If true, a huge story. Remember this theory apparently came from within the Labour Party, and it is claimed GB ordered the theory to be investigated.

I don't think we should always immediately leap to the anti-semitism charge!

Re: Anti Semitism in the Labour donations row. (#10)

Of course it can't be taboo to comment on any story and allegation, just because the word Israel is mentioned!  My concerns are more about some blog comments (not here - on Comment is Free, and at Conservative Home amongst other places) that are more along the lines of 'nudge, nudge, wink, wink, have you noticed a lot of these surnames are Jewish, etc' which have no place in a civilized debate.

Re: Anti Semitism in the Labour donations row. (#13)

There is no difference between the two.

Re: Anti Semitism in the Labour donations row. (#11)

Check out the photo of Abrahams in today’s Sunday Times and tell me that the “media” aren’t playing up the anti-Jewish card.  Goebbels would have been so proud......

Re: Anti Semitism in the Labour donations row. (#12)

Labour have been caught again with bad money, too many things have gone wrong of late and Labour is not learning is it.
