Identity Crisis?

The Black Socialist Society has decided to consult the membership on changing its name. The 5 options are:

- BAME Labour
- BAME Socialist Society
- Black and Asian Socialist Society
- Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Society
- Black Socialist Society

I'm for keeping the word "socialist" but beyond that I am not 100% decided which to plump for. How far does doing what it says on the tin go? Or is it the case that "black", rather than being simply a descriptor of complexion, can have a wider political meaning? The ballot paper has to be sent back by 22nd November so any suggestions are welcome. In the mean time, thankfuly for me, this is a case of OMOV - unlike the Labour deputy leadership election for which I ended up with quite a few votes.

Re: Identity Crisis? (#1)

BAE Labour would be ok.

Re: Identity Crisis? (#3)

How about "Labour All".

Re: Name Change Ballot..What a waste of money (#2)

I understand that for parliamentary selections, anybody who self-defines as an ethnic minority is entitled to be considered for selection in the BAME category, "and that includes Scottish and Irish" according to the regional office, and several white Europeans have been nominated in this category in London.

If the Black Socialist Society changes its name to the Black Asian and Minority Ethnic Socialist Society, does that mean that white European ethnic minorities like Poles, Greeks and Irish can now join?

Surely there are more pressing issues for the Executive Committee of the BSS to be dealing with, like ensuring that Labour's NEC pays greater regard to the ethnic minority population of a constituency prior to deciding whether to impose an AWS.

Walthamstow, 40% BAME has an AWS.  Easington 97.5% White, has an open selection.  Where was the voice of the BSS standing up for increased opportunities for ALL BME Labour party members?

Who cares what the organisation is called, if it doesn't stand up for its members.

Re: Name Change Ballot..What a waste of money (#5)

Any Scot, Irish or white European claiming to be 'an ethnic minority' these days, needs to be done under the Trades Description Act.

Re: Identity Crisis? (#4)

Of course BSS members must decide this themselves. But why would you want to drop the word 'socialist'?

Re: Identity Crisis? (#6)

BAME Labour sounds good.

Re: Identity Crisis? (#8)

BAME Labour

Re: Identity Crisis? (#7)

John51 says "Walthamstow, 40% BAME has an AWS.  Easington 97.5% White, has an open selection.  Where was the voice of the BSS standing up for increased opportunities for ALL BME Labour party members?"

I think he makes two points...one valid and one not. Firstly we should not use the lack of black representatives to knock the AWS and positive action to achieve proportionate representation of women in the Commons. The AWS is technically linked to getting women selected in winnable seats and there should be no going back on it til we achieve that proportionate representation. We can see that the other parties who criticise positive action have terrible representation of women and just expose the sexism in their selections.

However John51 is right to ask what the BSS is doing about poor black representation. They should also be pushing for some form of positive action to increase it, I think years of under-representation shows even our enlightened members are holding back good black candidates.

Diane Abbott makes the case for all-black shortlists in SCGN. The BSS would do well to take up the argument.

Re: Identity Crisis? (#13)

Don't forget that in most countries women are the majority and men form a minority!

Re: Identity Crisis? (#9)

God i must be off my rocker, the disabled are trying to join the human society, finding it very difficult under Labour, we have the Black Police federation, we have the Muslim federations.

So what happens when we start off with a white only federation.

We should be fighting for equality and making all federations society acceptable to all and enforcing people rights, not causing segregation.

We are going back wards, next the groups will want disabled toilets and toilets for minorities and toilets for non ethical groups.

I give up who cares anymore.

Re: Identity Crisis? (#10)

I think it's great that they'd consult the rest of the membership.

Here's a question for them and us to consider - is there a contradiction in having a seperate BME section to this party whose main aim is eqality?

Isn't it comparable to a Liberalist section of the Liberal Democrats or Free Market wing of the Conservative Party?

(It's actually two questions - but on a theme!)

Re: Identity Crisis? (#11)

Think of it this way: its to bring pressure on the Party to fulfil its obligations towards Equality when we have people with the blinkered vision of a treborc to educate, who believes that nothing needs to change and things are ok as it is.

Re: Identity Crisis? (#14)

Ok. What I'm getting at is - Doesn't it undermine the Party that people within the Party feel the need to excert pressure on equality obligations when we pitch ourselves as the Party of equality?

It looks like it demonstrates a belief from those sub-sections of the Party that it's not doing enough.

Re: Identity Crisis? (#16)

Precisely! You get our drift.

Re: Identity Crisis? (#12)

Guess I would qualify, but why pigeon-hole oneself like this? It's almost like discriminating against oneself because of one's colour! In principle I am against "ethnic" associations like this - what's wrong with a Left-wing society for everyone in the community? The same I fear can be said of the Black Police Officers Association and the like.

Re: Identity Crisis? (#15)

If an organisation can bill itself as exclusively for 'black' people, I much look forward to seeing the White Socialist Society appearing soon

Re: Identity Crisis? (#17)

The White Socialist Society has already appeared. Its called the Cabinet.

Re: Identity Crisis? (#18)

Nice one!
