Protest the Saudi state visit! - Wed 31st October

Join Labour MPs, Murad Qureshi AM, campaigners such as Peter Tatchell, Sandy Mitchell (former British prisoner in Saudi Arabia) and Yahya Al-Faifi (an exiled Saudi trade unionist) in a protest against the Saudi regime outside the Saudi Embassy this Wednesday from 6pm-8pm.

The protest has been called by the Socialist Youth Network (a coalition of young Labour party members) to oppose the Saudi regime and continued Western support for this brutal dictatorship.

The Embassy is on 30-32 Charles Street, W1J 5DZ - near Green Park station. For directions, please see: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=W1J+5DZ&ie=UTF8&ll=51.508075, -0.145741&spn=0.008641,0.010235&z=16&om=1

God, I actually agree with Owen for once. Good luck on the protest.

Re: Protest the Saudi state visit! (#2)

I found it a bit of a shock as well but a very good cause so I will be making the trip to London and I'll put a report up after I get back. Think quite a few bloggers are going.

These Saudi despots need to be removed and replaced by a more democratic government. Any takers?

Re: Protest the Saudi state visit! (#4)

Thanks for the support everyone. Regardless of our politically differences I'm glad that there's an issue we can all unite around.

Hope as many as possible can make it - and look forward to meeting many of you there.

Re: Protest the Saudi state visit! (#5)

Yep, good luck with the protest from me too.

"These Saudi despots need to be removed and replaced by a more democratic government. Any takers?"

Isn't that what we're trying to do in Iraq?

Re: Protest the Saudi state visit! (#7)

I thought someone would spot the irony of intervention in any foreign country whether its Zimbabwe or Saudi. The only ones in the end who can overthrow despots, are the peoples themselves, but it means a lot of self sacrifice, injury and death. Or, adopt the Gandhian model of peaceful civil resistance; but again it really means that the populace being prepared to take a great deal of punishment before things change. They cannot expect foreign powers to do it for them. Revolution has to come from the masses.
