parliamentary selections - question for Andrea

Andrea,

In the event that the election is called next week, which seats where a Labour MP is retiring are still to select/shortlist, so will have a shortlist decided by the NEC?

I make it:

Streatham, Walthamstow, Nottingham South, Calder Valley, Hull East, Sheffield Central, Airdrie and Shotts.

There must be some others I don't know.

And any predictions on MPs who are going to go at the last minute in exchange for a seat in the lords?

Re: parliamentary selections - question for Andrea (#1)

Burton (Janet Dean retiring)....selections timetable published, but if there's a snap GE, the current timetable can't work
Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintolloch East (Rosemary McKenna retiring)
Rochester and Stroud (Bob Marshall Andrews retiring)..timetable published, but it can't work for a snap GE
Birmingham Ladywood (Clare Short's old seat)
South Derbyshire (Mark Todd retiring)
Selby & Ainsty (notionally Con after boundary changes but it's where the majority of John Grogan's Selby will fall)
Stockton North (where apparently Frank Cook lost the trigger ballot)

Newly created Lab held Lancaster & Fletwood is currently selecting with shortlisting on October 18th and Husting on November 9th..so if there's a snap GE, the current timetable can't work.
New Lab/Plaid super marginal Arfon is currently selecting too but with the hustings scheduled after the likely date for a snap GE (if it takes place)

rumours of a late retirement in a Wolverhampton seat (easy to guess which one looking at Wolverhampton MPs)

Re: parliamentary selections - question for Andrea (#2)

I would be surprised if there a lot of late retirements. I think there would have been quite a few in a 'normal' cycle - but because of the snap General Election most will hold tight. If only because the relevant regional directors just won't want the hassle.

Re: parliamentary selections - question for Andrea (#3)

Mitchall in Greater Grimsby (small bet on a Yorkshire based MP "chicken-running" there).

50/50 Burgon having enough in Elmet.

Mark Fisher in Stoke, has only held on to await Elected Mayor screwing up his carear (now almost done).

Dobson....

aren't chicken run not allowed by Labour rules unless you've either lost a selection vote in your seat or you get a NEC special permission?

If the Yorkshire based MP is who I think it is, I recall to have read a story about him meeting Mrs Mitchell at an event and her reminding him that Austing wanted to stand again and it was such a shame for all those hopefuls visiting the seat recently (and those included the MP in question whom she was talking to)

Mark Fisher in Stoke, has only held on to await Elected Mayor screwing up his carear (now almost done).

Fisher screwing up the Mayor career or the Mayor screwing up Fisher's career?

Re: parliamentary selections - question for Andrea (#6)

The MP I have in mind has had his seat so altered it wouldn't be a problem in terms of the rules.

With Burgon, lets just say his keeness seems to go up and down with the poll ratings and Lord Burgon of Millenium Village as a certain ring to it.

Mayor screwing mayor's carear up, Fisher never really had one.

uhm, is the MP you have in mind the one who has  announced his retirement from his old seat citing among the reasons that his new seat was quite different from his old one and wanted to devout times to campaign for his current constituents rather than campaigning outside his own patch?

Re: parliamentary selections - question for Andrea (#9)

Not seen that statement but the language is familar. Have to say any slight irritation others may have if he does stand in any seat should be immediatily off-set by the knowledge he still has much to offer as an MP, especially given his relative youth.

Re: parliamentary selections - question for Andrea (#10)

ok, I think it's the same MP who I had in mind...practically the younger one among those having announced retirement

Re: parliamentary selections - question for Andrea (#13)

Stop talking around the subject and NAME NAMES!!

Re: parliamentary selections - question for Andrea (#5)

Colin Burgon is looking and talking like he is very much up for a fight with the Tories in Elmet and Rothwell. I'd be very suprised if he quit.

Re: parliamentary selections - question for Andrea (#8)

Burgon will take them on! One of the best MPs around...

Re: parliamentary selections - question for Andrea (#11)

Quite likely. I know an MP who's been asked to rescind their resignation announcement, and I can't imagine that they're alone.

Re: parliamentary selections - question for Andrea (#12)

Jack Dromey for Streatham, next door to Mrs Dromey?

Re: parliamentary selections - question for Andrea (#14)

I thought Lambeth BC Leader Steve Reed was a near certainty for Streatham? Or GLA member Valerie Shawcross?

Talking about Lambeth MPs how about Vauxhall? Hoey is 61 and has been somewhat detached from the main Labour Party for a while but is much loved in the constituency

Re: parliamentary selections - question for Andrea (#15)

She definitely hasn't got the urban fox vote.

Re: parliamentary selections - question for Andrea (#19)

Steve Reed is not a "near certainty".  He has only been leader of the council for 18 months, in which time he has taken Lambeth to be a one-star council (lowest in London) and the worst council in London for recycling. Oh, and his first move was to double his salary!

No, local members will be looking elsewhere.

we can rule Bruce George (Walsall South) out...he just said he will stand again if there's a snap GE because he doesn't want a parachuted candidate to succeed him

Re: parliamentary selections - question for Andrea (#17)

It would be useful for Andrea to include a URL for newspaper pieces where MPs make these public declarations to save us lazy people a google search
