Re: Liberal conservatism (#1)

The term is an oxymoron.

Re: Liberal conservatism (#2)

There's no such thing as 'liberal conservatism' - the two terms are contradictory, like 'compassionate conservativism'.

Re: Liberal conservatism (#3)

Wrong, I'm afraid.

Re: Liberal conservatism (#4)

In all seriousness, if you're going to come up with a neologism, then at least have the decency to define what it is.

Re: Liberal conservatism (#5)

There are liberal Conservatives, but there isn't a liberal conservatism. Not unless you're severly warping the meanings of one or the other.

Re: Liberal conservatism (#6)

As British Liberalism was born out of th Liberal Party that was, which was born out of the Whig's, which in itself was originally a party of privilage, Liberal Conservatism is clearly allowable of a concept...however has an influence on modern British politics it is as relevant as the IMG.

Re: Liberal conservatism (#7)

Liberal Conservatism eh?

I'm open minded that different points on the political compass may benefit descriptively from new monikers but let's not do this every time someone needs to explain what they mean.

I can imagine Conservative values effected by some liberal initiatives and vice versa - but Liberal Conservativism, and you suggest it is some kind of movement, sounds to me like a liberal conservative thinking. That's liberal...for a Conservative. Still less liberal than a conservatively minded Liberal.

A geographic example - the most Western part of East London - is still in East London.

[Is anyone else already very bored?]

Is it a threat? No. It the shifting of the whole political discourse leftward. The fewer conservative Conservatives in the country - the better for Labour.

Re: Liberal conservatism (#8)

Does anyone remember David Cameron calling himself a Liberal Conservation at around the time he became leader of the Tories? Well then if you can make out what Dave is then that's Liberal Conservatism.
