Brown: Saddam hanging "deplorable"

Gordon Brown joins John Prescott in telling Andrew Marr's Sunday AM that Saddam hanging was "deplorable"
Update [2007-1-7 7:9:7 by alexanderbaker]: Brown's comments prompt Downing Street response

The BBC is reporting that Gordon Brown labelled the manner of Saddam's hanging "deplorable" - the precise word John Prescott used in an interview with the Today programme earlier in the week.

I'm glad he has taken this stand. But will this impact upon TB's statement on the matter, which is due next week?

What do people make of Gordon Brown's comments? Update [2007-1-7 7:9:7 by alexanderbaker]: It seems Brown's comments have prompted an offical Downing Street response, which broadly follows the line taken by Prescott and Brown. Tony Blair is expected to comment next week, and I suspect he will say something very similar. alexanderbaker.blogspot.com

Re: Brown: Saddam hanging "deplorable" (#1)

Nice to see that Brown has actually said something interesting and intelligent for once. Blair should condemn the hanging too.

Re: Brown: Saddam hanging "deplorable" (#2)

I look forward to hearing exactly what he says.  The BBC report that Brown thought the manner of his hanging was deplorable, not that hanging itself was deplorable (my take on this here: http://bread-and-circuses.net )
I do worry that politicians claim not to be able to comment on Iraq's general use of capital punishment, but feel free to opine about 'lesser' things like the videoing of the execution.

Re: Brown: Saddam hanging "deplorable" (#3)

If our ministers had to make statements any time America or China executed someone, when would they have time to run the country?

Re: Brown: Saddam hanging "deplorable" (#4)

A bit late in the day for a statement from our next PM. He should have come straight out with it a day after. Nobody with any sense believes he is being said with sincerity but Brown is just joining the bandwagon.

Re: Brown: Saddam hanging "deplorable" (#5)

But the difference Alex is that, sadly, what goes on in Iraq is more newsworthy and guaranteed to elicit public opinion

Re: Brown: Saddam hanging "deplorable" (#6)

Who really cares what any of them have to say?

The government has already made its position clear, as it did BEFORE the execution.

This stupid media driven witch hunt for Blairs comments is boring and vindictive.

Re: Brown: Saddam hanging "deplorable" (#7)

I agree with Loz.

I think that a lot of this nonesense is because people here are against the death penalty - if the Iraqis HADNT executed Saddam and we had a Conservative Prime Minister coming out and saying that they should have hung him, a lot of people would be attacking him/her for undermining the decision of an elected foreign government.

I'm against the death penalty but, as I've said a couple of times before, I'm damned if I'm going to shed any tears for the Son of a Bitch - the thought of wasting time feeling sorry that a mass murderer was taunted in his last moments sickens me.
