Sauce for the goose ...

A lot of people (on left and right) say that Scotland should not be allowed to have independence because ...

... Scotland is too small to survive on its own. BTW, Scotland has a population of 5m. Much the same as Norway, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria and so on.

What if the people in Northern Ireland (2m people) voted in a referendum to leave the UK and join the Republic of Ireland (3m people)?

Would the same people say "Oh no, sorry, the Repblic of Ireland would still only be 5m people, that's not enough for a viable country, we are going to ignore the referendum"?

Re: Sauce for the goose ... (#1)

I dont think I've ever heard anyone say that Scotland shouldn't be ALLOWED independence.

I think people who say that 5m isn't enough for a viable country are simply arguing that it isn't in Scotland's interest to become independent.

Re: Sauce for the goose ... (#2)

Also - what are we voting Yes or No on in the poll?

Re: Sauce for the goose ... (#3)

Thanks, that is helpful. The question in the poll is the last question posed in the original article.

Re: Sauce for the goose ... (#4)

Well, as I said, I've never heard of anyone who says Scotland shoudn't be ALLOWED independence, sot the poll is moot.
