Barnet (council) by election

There is a by election in Barnet, due ot the death of a Tory coucnillor. (So upset were they by the loss that they anounced the by election details on the day of the funeral.)

Anyway, Barnet Labour are campaigning hard to have a good showing in the by election and
have:

Phoning going on Monday to Thursday evenings at  38 Church Lane N2 and 104 East Barnet Road EN4 offices from 6 - 8.30pm Monday to Thursday

and:

Delivering and canvassing/blitzing starting from 104 East Barnet Road on both Saturday and Sunday for the next three weekends (10am and 1pm on Saturday and 10.45am and 2pm on Sunday). The weather on Sunday looks good so we'd really like to flood the area (with people!).

Re: Barnet (council) by election (#1)

This is actually a by-election Labour should be in with a shot at; East Barnet is a ward Labour needs to win in 2010 to remove the controversial and divided Conservative administration.

Labour won seats here in 1994 and 1998 when in administration of the council with the Lib Dems.

The incumbent who died was a long-serving councillor not without a personal vote, so it's not out of the question that Labour could do well if a strong campaign is fought.

Re: Barnet (council) by election (#2)

Liberal Democrat Candidate Sean Hooker and his team have seized the initiative in this by election and he has the best chance of beating the Tories. Voting Labour instead of Liberal Democrat would only help the Conservatives to win.  It's a hard choice, but who would you rather see elected, the Conservative or the Liberal Democrat?

Re: Barnet (council) by election (#3)

I don't see much difference myself. I think the "progressive consensus" is wishful thinking and the LibDems are in some ways as right wing as the tories. If you add to that their cynical attitude towards policy and electioneering - some part of me would rather lose to a tory than to a libdem - because you can fight something that stands relatively still. The liberals will just say whatever each voter wants to hear.

rant over

Re: Barnet (council) by election (#4)

though not losing at all would be best   :)

Re: Barnet (council) by election (#5)

The Labour vote in East Barnet has been in decline, and they are hardly likely to win this by election. By the end of last weekend Labour had delivered two leaflets, Conservatives three, and Liberal Democrats five, so you can see who is putting the effort in. You would rather see the Conservatives win? How odd.

Re: Barnet (council) by election (#6)

That's interesting. I can't imagine the election expenses limit for one ward could me more than around £800.

I wonder how much the Tories and LibDems are accounting for their multitude of leaflet drops?

Re: Barnet (council) by election (#7)

The Lib Dems are now closing the gap, and Labour is trailing.

Re: Barnet (council) by election (#10)

More Lib Dem dishonesty. Typical.

Re: Barnet (council) by election (#8)

The gap between the Tories and Lieral Democrats is closing fast, and Labour is dropping right back. The Greens are feeling the strain.

Re: Barnet (council) by election (#9)

Well Bruce, with the result now in and the Lib Dems - as anyone who knows anything about London elections knew - trailing an irrelevant third, do you have sufficient integrity to come back to this forum and apologise for your dishonest and misleading posts?

Of course not - you're a Liberal Democrat.

For those interested, the result was Con 1666, Lab 1025, Lib Dem 552, Green 147.

Re: Barnet (council) by election (#11)

This was a disappointing result for the Liberal Democrats. Our canvassing results showed us in second place. What badly affected us more than the other parties was snow on the day, resulting in a low poll. This meant that postal votes had a greater effect than usual, and Conservatives and Labour had organised their postal vote, while the Liberal Democrats had not.

Next time we will do better!

Re: Barnet (council) by election (#12)

I would be interested to know your thoughts Bruce.

At 30.6 % it was the fourth highest turnout this year and would rank in the top 25% for last year.

Also your first leaflet which claimed that Labour could not win here was delivered within 7 days of the election being called.  At that stage they had not even knocked on one door.

So how does that tally up with from the start you claiming to be in second place?
