Alex's Conference Diary: Lee Barron on the week ahead

So I was on the Virgin train to Manchester this afternoon when I met Lee Barron, Leader of Northampton Council Labour Group, a pretty straight talking guy with something to say about his expectations of conference.

Re: Alex's Conference Diary: (#1)

Hi Alex - looking forward to these conference diary entries.  Hope you have a good time.  Which fringe events are you going to?

Re: Alex's Conference Diary: (#2)

You think I'm organised enough to know!

Re: Alex's Conference Diary: Lee Barron on the wee (#3)

What on earth is Gordon doing trying to repeat his independent BofE policy in the NHS!?

There are 2 fundemental problems with this.

First, the BofE have a narrow remit to make a simple decision every month - as to what they think interest rates will be. The simplicity of the decisions keeps the committee amicable there can be no arguments - you vote and that's that. Trying to extend this to the NHS shows that Gordon really doesn't have the intellect he claims.

Second, even if Gordon tries this, with inflation on the march and interest rates likely to rise voters will be saying in one year - what a bloody disaster that turned out to be. He will look like a one trick pony - and we will be embracing opposition.

Re: Alex's Conference Diary: Lee Barron on the wee (#5)

It seems to me that it is confusing headlines and policies that has led to the current mess, and personally I don't see anyone except Gordon able to get us out of it.

Re: Alex's Conference Diary: Lee Barron on the wee (#4)

The polls are confirming about Gordon every thing I am seeing in small focus groups of voters in key margins.

Brown will be leader - but will lead us into opposition.

Well campaign for someone else then.  (And put your name to it!)
