We need a different challenger to Brown
However, as I've said in comments on other posts, I don't think John McDonnell's campaign's the way to do that.
I belive that pitching one of the most left-wing MPs in Parliament against Brown will make it easy for him to defeat his opponent, which will then allow him to claim a mandate for PFI, the war in Iraq, expanded nuclear energy and all the other things he's likely to push for.
Let's not forget what happened when Benn and Heffer challenged for the leadership in 1988. They were humiliated and Kinnock used the victory as a mandate to push the party to the right.
That's why I believe that the campaign group should put its weight behind a more centre-left candidate, who will carry more MPs, more unions and more CLP members. That would allow them to make a decent showing against Brown and would force him onto centre left territory and he would have to make committments there.
